Certainly, it is not impossible to slow down the spread of the disease. We have seen that happening already. Of course, new infections can crop up elsewhere, that's the nature of pandemics (or near pandemics). If you slow it down enough, the northern hemisphere can enter a period of warmer weather and higher UV radiation, which might (it's uncertain as of yet) also slow down the spread.
It does hinge on enough testing kits, health system infrastructure, factual central information and public trust.
An additional problem is that a lot of infected people won't feel very sick. If people don't feel very sick, they are less prone to assume they are. These people can then become very effective spreaders of the disease.
