Why do you not have universal health care?
Why do you not have common sense gun laws?
Why do you not leave the middle east?
Why is the current situation at the border not as bad as under Trump?
Why do you keep electing out of touch seniors as your presidents the last 8 years?
Why do you not have a viable third party as bad as the other two are?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...poll-watchers/

Texas seems to following in Georgia's footsteps, with bills limiting drive through-voting and limit early voting hours. The story is also about a county official in Harris, stating in a leaked video the party needs an "election brigade of volunteers" in Houston as poll watchers. This seems coupled with a new law which pulls back on the ability of election officials to oversee poll watchers and expanding the role of such poll watchers.

As usual these days, the Harris county official argues for this by a plethora of claims of election fraud for which there is, as pretty much always, provided no evidence. Seems just like what democracy needs, a bunch of poll watchers that believes without evidence that widespread fraud is going on at any ballot box where their preferred candidate / party tends to do badly.

Republicans strongly oppose federal intervention in elections and the law backs them up to a degree. It is beyond pointless to discuss because courts will 100% strike down such specific guidelines like copy paste CO law. They may even strike some of the more general ones democrats are trying to get through, but at least those have a chance of getting in.

So if you are Republican acknowledging that forcing you into some realities:

- take a principled stand and hold to your convictions knowing you will never win elections again

- Try to adapt and change and appeal to more voters along common lines such as religion, etc but know then that some of your more racist supporters won't like the face of your changing party

- Or cheat. Openly, covertly and in every way possible and at every level possible to try and make it harder for 'others' to vote
I go with the bolded. (Although "never win elections again might be a bit too strong.")

Laggy do you recognize that Evangelicals are one of the least likely groups to take that principled stand and are more likely to comprise on everything they would say they want in a leader and party, as long as they are bought off with a few key considerations, as we saw with the Trump presidency?

Hi Coopster,

My answer to the above question is, "No."

That must be the mother of all loaded questions.

Just a reminder, the only issue with the 2020 GA election was that the state voted Dem and the legislature is still republican.

And yet History and Fact proved you wrong.

Trumps most reliable base, despite him being morally repugnant to what Evangelicals purport to stand for has always enjoyed his strongest base of support from them.

Principles "for sale" if you just offer us something we want, we are happy to be blind to the rest!!

Yes everyone should have a ID to vote but there are other elements in the bill that make it easier for the GOP to overturn or make it harder for folks to vote. Sadly they are to stupid to realize its some of their voters.

Reality is they should want Georgians to have the same voter rights as Colorado folks and go after those votes.
See e_d post above and if you click thru to the article the bolded below is why this is fair to compare to Jim Crow....

...Asked in an interview, “If this legislation had been in place in 2020, do you think the state board of elections should have stepped in in Fulton County?,” president pro tempore of the Georgia state senate Butch Miller, a co-sponsor of the bill, replied “clearly.”

And it’s not just 2024. Though Democrats ran a close race for governor in 2018, and won both president and U.S. Senate in 2020, Republicans hold substantial majorities in the Georgia House (103–76) and Senate (34–22). They’ve controlled both since 2005, and population concentration and gerrymandering will keep the legislature red while the state gets bluer. Now they transferred some power over elections from statewide and county-level officials to themselves.

It’s a mechanism for a degree of minority rule
....

This is an attempt to create a power structure that allows the minority republicans to lose elections but seize the mechanisms of power and just throw out the votes in largely minority areas with reasons that are not accountable to anyone but themselves.

The entire purpose is to get the black vote back to 3/5 of a white vote or whatever proportion is necessary to keep power.
