This is a pretty good case of why the Qanon movement (and people who buy into similar conspiracies) is doing incredible damage to efforts that could actually protect children and adolescents from sexual abuse and trafficking.

ya I think a National standard needs to be set for that age as it is just silly that it is perfectly fine in one State and yet a jailable offense in another.

And I prefer laws that set age gaps, even though that is arbitrary too. A 21 year old male should not get in trouble for having sex with a 16/7 year old girl but a 35 year old male... ok. I get that logic.

I remember when these type of absolute laws came about you had 19-21 year old males who were naïve and virgins with 16/17 year old who had been sexually active for some time, getting caught up in them simply as one was legally defined an adult and the other a child.

But for the key here is that Matt is a legislator and if you are going to impose these laws on citizens you should be held to the highest standards in terms of compliance to follow them.

I think prostitution should be legalized but I also think Elliot Spitzer deserved the harshest punishment possible for using prostitutes as he was actively jailing people doing same. It just adds a layer of offense for me.

But the bigger point is Republicans generally and Qanon types specifically feed off this faux outrage about the debauchery of Librulz, especially when it comes to all forms of sexual perversion.

I mean...let's break it all down however best we can. First, on a purely logical basis, sex with a 10,000 day old person is not the same as a 10,001 day old person.
And functionally, whether someone is 3, 4, 8, 11 doesn't make any sort of difference when the other person is a grow adult, or really even 14 and 11 is bad. But we're not calling it pedophilia if a 14 year old kid has sex with a 13 year old-- so we do recognize that there is something more going on with the term 'pedophilia' than just some purely legalistic definition of 'child'. (And random question but what is the term for a person who loves feet?).
So even if legally a 19 year old who sleeps with a 17 year is in jeopardy, we don't consider that person to be nearly as culpable as someone Gaetz' age sleeping with a 17 year old-- but that doesn't make it pedophilia and pretty much everyone understands this.
I'm definitely not here to defend Gaetz but I do think the qanon references are sort of funny. I get it, but it's putting partisan politics ahead of logical thought a little.

So I think calling out hypocrisy is great but it's always important to not lose sight of common sense when doing so.

That's really interesting, and I do like to pick on partisans some because they are so easy to pick on-- but that doesn't make me a partisan myself and I could definitely make the exact same arguments if Gaetz were a Democrat. I have enough self-awareness to state that with certainty.
