The link below should give some perspective on how countries are being hit by the pandemic and the outcomes/deaths. You should know that outcomes aren't a direct result of government either. Canada has been the beneficiary of being totally unprepared and slow to react meeting favorable circumstances to result in decent outcomes (all things considered). To me the difference between Canada and the USA here is NY was always a recipe for disaster and aside from age, obesity causing serious complications.

Trump is also benefiting from circumstance. Places like Italy and Spain had less time. The USA managed to lockdown and not run in to shortages of beds, ventilators, etc. Trump (just like everyone else) wasn't prepared and now gets to brag and act like he had things under control the whole time when in reality he managed to lockdown too late but still early enough to avoid massive disaster (Spain, Italy, France)

I don't see how you rate the USA response as unique or worse than others. By outcome it did well. By policy, reaction, and preparation, it did virtually the same as everyone else. Perhaps there's an embedded USA#1 mentality embedded where if they aren't taking the lead and rescuing the rest of the world in the process, they're the worst
