i think the main issue for so many couples struggling with children is that they aren't trying during their peak fertile years and thus you're conflating age with fertility
i'm confident that you and many of those people you've spoken to which had those struggles would not have such issues had they made similar efforts at getting pregnant when they were 17
historically, once women began having their periods, they would be married off and soon have children of their own
the idea of women having children after their 20s was an absurd notion before modern fertility aids
much of the world still holds these views - it's nearly impossible for woman over the age of 30 to get married in asia because the man's family will not approve because she won't be viewed as fertile
