I don't know much about the old USSR but I thought gulags were political prisons. Meh.
Anyway, the problem there was authoritarian rule and the problem here is authoritarian rule. There they overtly seized the means of production and here the government works for private corporations that control the means of production.
The point is you need some working form of democracy to represent the needs of the people. If only a country would fight a revolution and stare one......
