China can't get rid of it completely, but any success they do have definitely gives them a leg up on America.

I'd love to hear stories from people in large human resources departments and what sort of experiences they're having while trying to sift through the under 30 crowd for potential hires.

In the last 12 months, fully 7% of our rental units have had applications submitted for emotional support animals. I contend this is just abuse of the system to bypass no-pet policies, but if not then that's a shocking number of people who can't cope with basic existence.

I did my best to delay the inevitable with my own kids. My daughter didn't get a phone until high school, but she might be making up for lost time.

No it doesn't. This is the same decades-old, "What's X? Your kids are doing X, and what you don't know might kill them! News at 6!"

Yeah, it sucks that TikTok takes people's data without their consent. That's definitely not the case at Google, Facebook, the NSA, etc., etc...

TikTok is extremely NOT some new, fearsome phenomenon. But despite that it's very common to see conservatives like you and grizy get scared about it.

I had to google this, and it's pretty much exactly what I'm talking about. I have no doubt it was hilarious to this guy that his child couldn't figure out how to use a can opener, but social media prompted him to video tape it for 6 hours or whatever and then upload it for likes, and now people are acting like this girl is permanently scarred for life and he's literally Hitler. The fact that all of these people are saying it leads to an increased chance that she actually buys into that ****.

I've definitely laughed at my kids for not knowing how to do basic things, but then you just show them how to do it and it's a funny story for later. That's how it has worked since the beginning of time.

Social media is concentrated with people who are like the mom who sees her kid fall over and immediately runs up to make sure they're okay screaming, "OH GOD ARE YOU HURT, LET ME SEE!" The kid in question will start making a scene 100% of the time because the stupid parent sets the tone. The parent who provides a muted or no reaction ends up with a kid who just gets up and isn't an insufferable crybaby about everything.

The crybabies are scared to go outside now and thus, have taken over the internet.

Hmmm. Could this be a first big strategic mistake by the Chinese?

Will this become a flash point for ISIS and other Islamic forces to mobilize around as yet another 'invader' tries to set up a strategic bulkhead in a region that has always seen such presence as intolerable?

Or can China stickhandle this as all the others prior have failed to do?

'Military' planes are spotted landing at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan after it was claimed China is 'considering' sending soldiers to ex US airbase to strengthen ties with Taliban

- There are unconfirmed reports that Chinese military planes have landed at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan

- New images from Afghanistan show that power has been restored to the base and multiple sources alleged military planes arrived at the former US stronghold

- It comes after Yun Sun, Director of the China Program at Stimson Research Center, said China would be 'eager' to occupy the airfield and seize any equipment left over by the US

- The move would be an attempt to strengthen ties with the Taliban and embarrass America

If by "flash point for ISIS and other Islamic forces to mobilize" you mean America funding and supporting anyone willing to go be a thorn their side. Then yeah, could be a decent possibility.

That is exactly what I meant.

If China's goal is to embarrass the USA (and Russia prior) by showing they can accomplish in Afghanistan, what the US and Russia failed to do, this could easily be exploited.

A little dark money sprinkled in amongst the right loud voices who then declare China's presence on the ground an abomination to Islam, and voila.

What will China then do when an increasing number of their people on the ground are killed? Turn and run or add more forces to fortify. Either way the trap is set.

That argument is not so black and white.

The original premise of all Free Trade deals always included the imbalance between trading partners. NAFTA believed that short term the US and Canada would enjoy cheaper Mexican goods, while suffering some lower skill job loss, but eventually all ships would rise as Mexico also got richer and their citizens became consumers and not just producers.

Thus some short (not so short) term pain that would eventually tip to long term gain for all.

That was the same consideration for China. China would start as a Producer State only but as a Middle Class was built and expanded Chinese industry would not be able to supply all their needs and there would be a swing back to balance where other countries would be selling in to China as well and enjoying that massive NOW consumer society.

Long term gain for all.

That was largely happening as Chinese wages increased and the middle class grew as an increasing amount of the goods produced in China got on shored back to their home countries for cost reasons.

Everyone was mostly OK with that type of deal and exchange.

What concerned others however is that it became clear that CHina was not just on a path to build their middle class and become more consumerist but was on a path to become the Worlds leading super power.

It was recognized with that huge population base, moving to the Middle Class and becoming consumerist, and the GDP that would generate for CHina, they would dwarf the Western G7 GDP COMBINED which would mean they could fund Military expansion, Tech Dominance, and other strategic areas beyond the West's ability to compete.

That became the reason to STOP China and not the pretense of 'they are stealing our jobs' which was always built in and was rectifying itself over time.

(and I am not arguing that China does not steal IP, or a is a good actor. See my prior posts in this thread as I think China poses a unique World threat like few other Super Powers have despite them abusing their power. I believe if China was able to become the Sole World power comparable to what the US enjoyed, disparity wise, over the last few decades, the entire world would be put on notice similar to how Hong Kong is currently. China does not **** around when they know they have might on their side. They are then 'right' and all negotiations end, or they end them.)

China has won AI battle with U.S., Pentagon's ex-software chief says
October 10, 2021,

China has won the artificial intelligence battle with the United States and is heading towards global dominance because of its technological advances, the Pentagon's former software chief told the Financial Times.

China, the world’s second largest economy, is likely to dominate many of the key emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and genetics within a decade or so, according to Western intelligence assessments.

Nicolas Chaillan, the Pentagon's first chief software officer who resigned in protest against the slow pace of technological transformation in the U.S. military, said the failure to respond was putting the United States at risk.

"We have no competing fighting chance against China in 15 to 20 years. Right now, it’s already a done deal; it is already over in my opinion," he told the newspaper. "Whether it takes a war or not is kind of anecdotal."

China was set to dominate the future of the world, controlling everything from media narratives to geopolitics, ...

...Chinese companies, Chaillan said, were obliged to work with their government and were making "massive investment" in AI without regard to ethics.

He said U.S. cyber defences in some government departments were at "kindergarten level"....

China overtakes US in AI research
Jockeying for supremacy intensifies as two sides grapple with security issues

AUGUST 10, 2021

China is overtaking the U.S. in artificial intelligence research, setting off alarm bells on the other side of the Pacific as the world's two largest economies jockey for AI supremacy.

In 2020, China topped the U.S. for the first time in terms of the number of times an academic article on AI is cited by others, a measure of the quality of a study. Until recently, the U.S. had been far ahead of other countries in AI research.

One reason China is coming on strong in AI is the ample data it generates. By 2030, an estimated 8 billion devices in China will be connected via the Internet of Things -- a vast network of physical objects linked via the internet. These devices, mounted on cars, infrastructure, robots and other instruments, generate a huge amount of data....

FBI Raids Chinese Point-of-Sale Giant PAX Technology
October 26, 2021

U.S. federal investigators today raided the Florida offices of PAX Technology, a Chinese provider of point-of-sale devices used by millions of businesses and retailers globally. KrebsOnSecurity has learned the raid is tied to reports that PAX’s systems may have been involved in cyberattacks on U.S. and E.U. organizations.

Headquartered in Shenzhen, China, PAX Technology Inc. has more than 60 million point-of-sale terminals in use throughout 120 countries.

...Several days ago, KrebsOnSecurity heard from a trusted source that the FBI began investigating PAX after a major U.S. payment processor started asking questions about unusual network packets originating from the company’s payment terminals.

According to that source, the payment processor found that the PAX terminals were being used both as a malware “dropper” — a repository for malicious files — and as “command-and-control” locations for staging attacks and collecting information...

...The source said two major financial providers — one in the United States and one in the United Kingdom — had already begun pulling PAX terminals from their payment infrastructure,...

...PAX is now claiming that the investigation is racially and politically motivated.”...

... it should be noted that point-of-sale terminals and the technology that supports them are perennial targets of cybercriminals.

It is not uncommon for payment terminals to be compromised remotely by malicious software and made to collect and transmit stolen information. Indeed, some of history’s largest cyberheists involved point-of-sale malware, ...

Even if it were publicly proven today that the company’s technology was in fact a security risk, my guess is few retailers would be quick to do much about it in the short run. ... global computer chip shortages are causing lengthy delays in procuring new electronics.

FCC votes to terminate China Telecom Americans authority to provide U.S. services
Oct 26, 2021

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Tuesday voted to revoke China Telecom’s U.S. subsidiary’s authorization to operate in the United States, citing national security concerns.

China Telecom, the largest Chinese telecommunications company, has had authorization to provide telecommunications services for nearly 20 years in the United States. China Telecom Americas must discontinue services within 60 days...

...The FCC found that China Telecom “is subject to exploitation, influence, and control by the Chinese government and is highly likely to be forced to comply with Chinese government requests without sufficient legal procedures subject to independent judicial oversight.”

The FCC added that “China Telecom Americas’ ownership and control by the Chinese government raise significant national security and law enforcement risks by providing opportunities” for the company and the Chinese government” to access, store, disrupt, and/or misroute U.S. communications.”...

The US and West may be able to slow China and give it several set backs by banning Chinese megaCorps and thus destroying their viability but then cannot stop China as China is correct that they can grow substantially, for many, many, many years by just feeding their own growing consumption and holding on to their silk road allies.

But the bigger challenge for China will be that their plan for world dominance (something I believe they can achieve) is multigenerational. The are very smartly trying to build it to last, wanting to exceed the time frame the US has enjoyed as the Worlds premier Super Power and that will require potentially lots of sacrifice from current generation(s) to achieve those long term ends. As those citizens get more and more of a taste of increasing freedoms, the question is will they be willing to take this journey with Chinese leadership or will they increasingly push back and undue them from within?

It will be an interesting road to watch as China travels down it.

The ‘lying flat’ movement standing in the way of China’s innovation drive

...China’s leaders have staked the country’s future on innovation. In its latest blueprint for national economic development, China has pledged to end its reliance on imported technology and to focus on domestic consumption as the primary driver of growth. At a conference in May for engineers and scientists, Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged greater self-reliance in science and technology, which would serve, he said, as “the strategic support for national development.”

China’s drive toward technological independence has raised alarm bells in the West, where a resurgent China powered by a leading technology industry is widely considered the key strategic challenge of the 21st century. But these fears all too often fail to consider the internal obstacles facing Beijing’s push toward tech supremacy. Among them is one very low-tech problem: a prevailing sense of social and professional stagnation.

The drive toward self-reliance has encountered an unlikely form of resistance in a generation of young Chinese who balk at the Party’s high-minded calls for “continued struggle” alongside an deeply engrained culture of overwork without the promise of real advancement.

They opt instead for “lying flat,” or tangping (躺平). The “lying flat” movement calls on young workers and professionals, including the middle-class Chinese who are to be the engine of Xi Jinping’s domestic boom, to opt out of the struggle for workplace success, and to reject the promise of consumer fulfilment. For some, “lying flat” promises release from the crush of life and work in a fast-paced society and technology sector where competition is unrelenting. For China’s leadership, however, this movement of passive resistance to the national drive for development is a worrying trend—a threat to ambition at a time when Xi Jinping has made grand ambition the zeitgeist of his so-called “New Era.”

‘Lying flat is justice’

The “lying flat” movement was jumpstarted in April when a post on Baidu titled “Lying Flat Is Justice” went viral on the platform. A manifesto of renunciation, the post shared the author’s lessons from two years of joblessness. The extraordinary stresses of contemporary life, the author concluded, were unnecessary, the product of the old-fashioned mindset of the previous generation. It was possible, even desirable, he argued, to find independence in resignation: “I can be like Diogenes, who sleeps in his own barrel taking in the sun.” Discussions about “lying flat” picked up pace in May, as young Chinese, over-worked and over-stressed, weighed the merits of relinquishing ambition, spurning effort, and refusing to bear hardship....

Yeah, it sounds like the kids are pulling one over on the Boomers, not sure what the problem is.

Alternatively, young people living through an incredibly stressful crisis are actively seeking out ways to take care of their mental health. I guess we’re supposed to laugh at this and take it as a sign of weakness?
