That argument is not so black and white.
The original premise of all Free Trade deals always included the imbalance between trading partners. NAFTA believed that short term the US and Canada would enjoy cheaper Mexican goods, while suffering some lower skill job loss, but eventually all ships would rise as Mexico also got richer and their citizens became consumers and not just producers.
Thus some short (not so short) term pain that would eventually tip to long term gain for all.
That was the same consideration for China. China would start as a Producer State only but as a Middle Class was built and expanded Chinese industry would not be able to supply all their needs and there would be a swing back to balance where other countries would be selling in to China as well and enjoying that massive NOW consumer society.
Long term gain for all.
That was largely happening as Chinese wages increased and the middle class grew as an increasing amount of the goods produced in China got on shored back to their home countries for cost reasons.
Everyone was mostly OK with that type of deal and exchange.
What concerned others however is that it became clear that CHina was not just on a path to build their middle class and become more consumerist but was on a path to become the Worlds leading super power.
It was recognized with that huge population base, moving to the Middle Class and becoming consumerist, and the GDP that would generate for CHina, they would dwarf the Western G7 GDP COMBINED which would mean they could fund Military expansion, Tech Dominance, and other strategic areas beyond the West's ability to compete.
That became the reason to STOP China and not the pretense of 'they are stealing our jobs' which was always built in and was rectifying itself over time.
(and I am not arguing that China does not steal IP, or a is a good actor. See my prior posts in this thread as I think China poses a unique World threat like few other Super Powers have despite them abusing their power. I believe if China was able to become the Sole World power comparable to what the US enjoyed, disparity wise, over the last few decades, the entire world would be put on notice similar to how Hong Kong is currently. China does not **** around when they know they have might on their side. They are then 'right' and all negotiations end, or they end them.)
