I fully understand that and agree with you. But I think Gaetz and a lot of Republican congressmen actually believe their own rhetoric. I hope for the sake of the country I'm wrong.

Most of them probably grew up, or at least lived quite a few years, in that community they represent comprised by that 75-80% Trump supporters. It would not be at all surprising if they shared many of the same beliefs.

The issue you have now is, you are in the precarious position of dealing with people who riot when the "right" reasons are determined by other people. The left set this standard of justifying this type of behavior against stuff people don't like/agree with.
You are in here literally and explicitly diminishing a coordinated terrorist attack on the US Capitol organized and supported by the President of the United States based on a lie to undo the very foundation of democracy -- the peaceful transition of power -- as being more or less equivalent to burning down a Taco Bell when police murder someone without consequence.

Trumpism will live long after Trump is gone. This guy got a standing O for just lying a whole lot about basic facts

I hold out hope that this whole sordid affair ends up being good for US democracy by waking up some of the Republicans that were along for the ride and not as far out there on the Trump train as the Grahams and Hawleys, as well as some of the moderate Republican voters, and that efforts are now made to plug some of the holes in the system.

What fascinates me about that poll is a non-zero percentage of democrats blame biden for the storming

You should not have this hope, because very, very few people are going to face any consequences for this. And if they don't face consequences, then there won't be any consequences when they try again the next time, and the next time, and the next time, until it works.

Things have gotten so bad, I'm actually a little heartened by that number. I mean, of course that number should be single digits, but it's amazed me the numbers or Republicans that have supported stupid **** lately, so 45% almost seems good.

To be clear, when I say "waking up", I mean realizing that this **** is ludicrous and can't be tolerated.

Doesn't matter if it gets done at midnight or 4 AM. I just want to see it done tonight.

What's funny about these things, 45% is about 15-20% of the country.

Republicans aren't capable of being better than this. This is who they've been at least since the Tea Party days, and probably back to the Gingrich era (and maybe farther but I wasn't exactly around then). This is their final form that's been developing for years, and they've intentionally cultivated a base that now demands this behavior of them. They can't just unopen that box.

It's being tolerated, though. Did you not see the police tolerating it? Do you not see that Congress will do nothing to Trump during his last two weeks or to the members who support the terrorists? You may think it's intolerable, but it will be tolerated because it is being tolerated. We're going to see this every single election that Democrats win from here until the death of democracy.

Yes, I understand it's been tolerated. Not just tolerated, but in many cases, encouraged. That's why I said my hope was that it wakes up some of the people who have tolerated it, and they finally realize how far down a very dark road they've travelled, and what their tolerance has enabled and inspired others to do.

Perhaps it's an unrealistic hope, but I'll hold on to it for now just the same.

I can’t wait to hear the reason why law enforcement let these people storm a building they are sworn to protect. They have the weapons, training and the law on their side.

This was all known in advance too. I told this is the day.

I saw one of the protestors pepper spray an officer and nothing happened. The officer backed off.

If this was any other group, they would be killed. These guys went on a private tour dressed up in Halloween costumes.

Are they going to arrest these people?

Trump will pardon them. He really will. They know it.

Here's a guy documenting multiple felonies he's committed for all to see. Bobo, would you like to have a $100 even money wager payable to the charity of the winner's choice on whether this guy is indicted (not even convicted)? I'm on no. Push if no one ever figures out who this guy is.

No, I'm not. I'm pointing some of you (including you specifically) have no credibility to denounce it, based on constant need to defend rioters most of this year. Leftist activist created this standard of mobbing/rioting.

The difference between you and I is, I condem both, and call for the rule of law, irrelevant of the reasons people are rioting, you don't.

Mobbing and rioting is bad at any time in a civilized society. You don't hold that same position. I don't buy your contempt.

You do not care about mobs and rioting, stop pretending you do. You only care about the reasons they do it.

If you mean the Joe Schmoes that no one's ever heard of, I doubt it. If you mean any ringleaders, I suppose wouldn't put it past him.

Given that you've aimed this specifically at me, it seems you're attributing me with much more optimism of sunny days than I really have. I expressed a hope, nothing more.

That said, I'm intrigued. I've never been remotely close to placing a wager on our forums before, but I like this one because a charity wins. I honestly don't know if he'll be charged or not, but I think there is a decent chance he will be. Even viewing this very cynically - he's just some schmuck that the deplorables will be happy to throw to the dogs to make them happy.

And either way, a charity gets $100. Booked.

Apparently his name is Richard Barnett from Gravette, Arkansas.

Edit...

"5NEWS spoke with Barnett, and he confirmed he was at the protest today when the photo was taken at the desk in Speaker Pelosi's office. He claims he was just looking for a bathroom inside the Capitol building."
