I've been a KC Chiefs fan since birth. I wasn't there on Thursday but have had season tickets for 15+ years. Yes, there is racism in the area. I didn't see a black person in Springfield Missouri till I was 5 years old. True story.
Thats some serious segregation. That was a long time ago. Missouri definitely has its share of rednecks, But, KC are is a very liberal city. Progressives run the city.
From talking with fellow fans that were there heres what happened. The fans weren't told what the ceremony was about, when it would happen or what they were supposed to do during the ceremony. Only that something was going to happen.
We always boo the visiting team when they come out onto the field. Some fans were upset that the Texans didn't stay on the field with the Chiefs for the Anthem. Fans saw our football saviour lining up in the middle of the field with the other players. They said something about a moment of silence. But, people couldnt really hear what was being said or what they were doing on the field. The announcer said that the ceremony is over and about 25% of the Texans team hadn't even lined up yet.
I think it was a combination of a poorly organized and communicated "unity" ceremony. Having the Texans come on the field when its traditional to get boo'd. Most figured it out about 1/2 way through they were supposed to be silent. Thats why the boos by a small minority seemed louder because the vast majority were remaining silent. Very few heard the boos like you heard in the broadcast. They thought it left over from booing the Texans as they came out.
