And doctors will still make a good living. and if you are off the charts the best doctor, you will get rich people paying you out of pocket. but have some faith in your fellow human beings. this is the seed that the bernie revolution will plant.

as it stands, our life expectancy is falling because we are miserable living under corporate rule. someone worse than trump will come along, seeing how easy it is for an idiot con man to pull it off, we will all die in war, global warming, or just oxy's and bourbon.
You don't think there's be a major fall off in capital investments in R&D if big pharma companies weren't allowed to monetize the benefits? This seems like wishful thinking. There may be some subset doing it purely for their own vanity but most who go into these fields are absolutely considering their monetary compensation even if it's not the only consideration.

University endowments and government grants would still exist but the amount spent via profit seeking capital investments in big pharma companies is a huge part of what's driving innovation.

americans really are getting ****ed by virtue of all the free riders but the alternative might still be worse globally. this is a separate issue from whether there're ways that the pricing structure could be improved / issues with insurance.

i think we need big change and we have to start soon. if climate change is what they say, slowly we need to be not driven so much by greed, not necessarily for what we want for ourselves right now, but for the future generations. we might suffer for one generation or so in terms of economic growth but have to start somewhere.

if someone has a nice apartment big enough for a family, a steady job, they feel safe, health care good, lots of vacation, decent hours, education good, they feel they contribute, they know the climate won't be horrible for their kids...what evidence is there that someone is more happy with obsessing over money and 4 cars and a mansion? i think that is a capitalist myth.

business and enterprise is fine, people should be rewarded, but why is "unlimited wants" something assumed. does it really add utility, value to life?

got to start somewhere imo.

Yeah, Elizabeth is no longer a short but a fair buy.

Elizabeth Warren reminds me of Marcy Darcy on Married with Children - especially when Al calls her a chicken.

The thing is Klobuchar is every one keeps saying she's got electability and I guess her election results reflect that but then no one ever says what makes her electable, they just point to the election results

Electability is only something that can be determined ex post facto.

No one thought Trump was electable, but he won, so he was electable. Everyone thought Hillary was electable, especially against Bernie in the primary, but she didn't win so she didn't have electability.

I was just shocked that Elizabeth Warren had 10 million stashed in her senate re-election fund.

Mayor Pete crushed her on that

I was skeptical for a long time, but I now think we're about to get a repeat performance. Old Joe "Leghair" Biden is gonna toughguy-act his way right into the losing side of an electoral landslide.

The strength of the economy is an undeniable reality and is what probably does most of the work for Trump. Second is the impeachment farce, which is an almost exact replica of the bullshit that Wisconsin democrats tried with Scott Walker right after he was elected, and it backfired hard on them. Not only did Walker win the recall by more than the original election, but Dems had their asses handed to them in the state assembly, senate, and then supreme court elections to follow.

Maybe Yang, who is quite literally promising a monthly check in exchange for every vote, is the best last hope.

Shame. I was looking forward to one of the socialists magic-wanding my student loans away.

lol, still butthurt that Walker didn’t become the rising star of the Republican Party. How out of touch with America did you have to be to think he was going anywhere.

Question about that 10 million. If she was not running for president and decided to retire what happens to that 10 million?
Even she runs another term has a couple million left and loses?

Is that how Senators get filthy rich while in office

Same way people get rich in the non-profit sector. Suddenly all 19 of Warren's grandkids are administrative assistants for a little while.

So now that Bayh is leaving elected office when his term ends early next year, where does all that money go?

“The bottom line is no personal use, obviously,” Judith Ingram, a Federal Election Commission spokeswoman, told Capital Eye. “In addition, he can donate it to charity, or contribute it to the national party committee. He can contribute up to $2,000 to another candidate’s committee, put it into a PAC, convert his campaign committee into a PAC. He could do nothing with it … if he decided to run again he could dip back into it.”

After retiring — or losing an election — politicians are not required to close down their campaign committees; they may keep them running indefinitely. Sometimes they do this to pay off campaign debt, or, to keep their war chest full if they were to ever seek office again. After paying down any debts, money is often spent to “wind down” the committee and pay off any office expenses.

For those who still have cash on hand, the FEC sets guidelines regarding how candidates’ committees may spend campaign funds. Other than the prohibition on personal use, there are few limitations. Punishments for violating the prohibition on personal use range from substantial fines to possible prison time.

“The overarching rule is that it can’t be converted to personal use, but that it can be used for any other lawful purpose,” Campaign Legal Center attorney Paul Ryan explained.

Despite the many options open to retiring members, national party committees will almost certainly pressure Bayh and other retirees to transfer a significant portion of their leftover campaign funds to the party coffers.
