Do your family and friends continue to push you to deal with your addictions?

Do you insist that your friends and family accept you as you are -- that is, not pester you about your drinking and gambling -- if they want to maintain a relationship with you?

Do you find that drinking while gambling reduces your anxiety about gambling more than you can comfortably afford to lose?

My father lives in the US, and we speak on the phone maybe twice a year, and I haven't spoken to my mother for almost 4 years. While mammy and I never got on since the age of about -5, the last straw was, guess what, she was a ****ing trumper.

I am sure my family are sad.

As for friends - well, I don't have many, but the ones I do have, understand. I had a friend lend me 30k recently on word. This is someone I met at work. Like I say, some people get it, some people don't.

We're way, way, beyond that. I mean, I got locked up 17 years ago and they didn't bail me out. I don't think anyone is in a position to be making demands here.

Sure. I also find that drinking while dancing makes me irresistible to women. I'll leave the evaluation of the efficacy of these treatments as an exercise for the reader.

I asked because my wife's father died of alcoholism. A few years before he died, he told her that he refuse all contact with her if she ever mentioned his drinking again.

I was wondering whether you had ever given someone a similar ultimatum. It sounds like the answer is no.

No, man, and I have no idea why anyone would do something like that. I'm sorry to hear that.

As you've probably seen, I wear my heart on my sleeve. My friends & family know exactly who I am and what I'm about, and they can take it or leave it. I wouldn't ever dream of blackmailing someone like that. That sounds horrible.

Your family knew you were in jail and they wouldn’t bail you out??? That’s horrible. I’m sorry. How much was bail?

Read the 3 threads and appreciate you sharing your experience. I'll get you a beer if you're ever in Glasgow after covid's under control.

What would have happened if they bailed you out?
Where would you be now? Do you think, there is a possibilty, not bailing you out was a good thing?

Sorry if this is too personal, dont answer. Maybe think about it.
I got bailed out but my bail was only at 5k.

I spent the first 2 of my formative years in the UK in Glasgeee!

For real, I learnt English in Glasgow. When we moved down south I got bullied for saying "aye" all the time, till I fell into line.

Love the Gorbals by the way, lovely people.

50k. They didn't bail me out but they got me a lawyer, for like 5k. This guy was a ****ing clown. Seriously, imagine Rococo in a clown suit...

I'd have probably run. I have no idea how people voluntarily surrender to do time. I only did a year, which is not a huge amount in the greater scheme of things, but I swear I will never go back, I'd sooner, erm, well, you get the picture. I really don't understand people who fight death cases just to get a commutation to life. I'd much rather the former.

Thats fair enough if they got you a lawyer imo. They have been probably adviced to do so. I know it sounds harsh. I hope nothing happened to you in prison, in which case I alopolgize for my honest words.

Not being bailed out is really painful , especially when I hear stories from some people I know about spending months in jail because they couldn’t afford $200 dollars. I don’t know how bail works in your country because where I’m from 50k bail usually means 5K. But yeah not being able to trust your own lawyer is the nut low.
Did you at least get time served?
11-30-2020 , 09:50 PM
See, you might have got shot. In the US they dont mess around.
Not bailing you out was probably the best hing happening to you at the time. They say dont do the crime if you cant do the time.

Just for the record 7 years is nothing. You still got options if you want.

This was in the US, in Boston. Spaceman - it was 500k equity, 50k cash, not 50k/5k.

Lucky in a lot of ways, I've discovered since then that Mass is basically the best state to do time, at least county time. At least it wasn't Rikers.

I got 20 months committed, 5 years probation. DA was asking for a 2, 2, and 3 running concurrent or something like that. He basically wanted me to do 3 upstate. Judge was nice to me, kept me in county. I mean, I did steal 250k+, but it was from a law firm who was screwing the state for the sweet tobacco settlement monies at the time, so I think that went in my favour.

Whoa that’s like serious stuff. I wouldn’t have asked except you seemed pretty open about it. Respect.

So you allegedly stole money from a corrupt company, and were not able to build a proper defense due to excessive bail and thus a judge who could see the hypocrisy of the situation gave you a sweetheart deal because his hands were otherwise tied. You should just tell people you’re Robin Hood.

Running, where? You would have had go to mexico, forge another passport and then if lucky fly somehow to the UK. You think that is magagable for a 19 y old? You were around 19 right? Also, that would have meant never being able to enter the USA.
