Madison WI Clowns Pull Down Forward Statue & Hans Christian Heg Statues

Forward Statue
Quote:

Forward depicts a woman standing on the prow of a boat, the figure-head of which is 'Old Abe,' according to the Historical society.

Old Abe, who was named after President Abraham Lincoln, was the mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry and became an inspirational symbol of Union troops and Wisconsin's Civil War history in the decades that followed.

"The boat is surging through the water, and the figure, poised gracefully but firmly upon the prow, stretches forth the right hand, while the left clasps the American flag to its bosom," the Historical Society says.
Hans Christian Heg
Quote:

Heg soon entered local politics and joined the Free Soil Party, which was centered around opposing the expansion of slavery into the western United States

He fought against Confederate armies

Heg was appointed colonel of the 15th Wisconsin Infantry — a group consisting mostly of recent immigrants from Scandinavia — in the fall of 1861. He trained at Camp Randall in December and left for the South on March 2, 1862.

He died fighting for the Union

Heg's brigade chased a retreating Confederate army to Chickamauga, Georgia, on Sept. 19, 1863.

Outnumbered, Heg was leading a charge in front of his troops when he was shot in the abdomen. He died the next morning.
Very concerned and aware of US Hidtory no doubt

Really good thread. Appreciate the civil discussion.

I'm curious about people's thoughts on whether we are becoming more racist as a country. Really, from the 70s til now, as that encompasses my lifetime.

I'm really just taking a hard look at myself. Have I changed?

I loved the Dukes of Hazzard. Had the toy car when I was a kid and pretended to be Bo Duke.

When I was playing football in middle school I got in a fight in a game. I ripped this rebel flag off of an opposing player and three black dudes got me pretty good. I honestly can't recall if I was thinking about race in that moment, but I hated that flag. Not sure they were thinking about race either. They definitely felt differently about that flag, though.

I know my parents never did anything in front of us kids that would have contributed to racist tendencies. In fact, I still have a slight quiver in my lip from a back hand I got from my Vietnam vet dad when I used a racial slur to refer to Asians when I was around 10.

In middle school, we only had 3 black students. Then, in high school, there were never more than 2 white kids on my basketball team. My freshman year, we were on a road trip and I got into a fight with a black senior on the team. Don't remember thinking about race in that moment, though I'll admit, being a white freshman on the varsity team I experienced quite a bit of culture shock. But, in that moment, I was just pissed that Lasander came into my hotel room to take a dump.

Eventually had a 20 year career as a counselor/social worker. 90% of my clients were black and hispanic. At some point, I started to think our interventions were making things worse. Broke my heart to see what we were doing to those families so I retired to raise chickens.

Haven't given much thought to the statues. I'm back to being OK with the rebel flag again, though. I'm ok with being called a racist by Dems. It's not much different than being called a terrorist by Reps because I don't support war.

Just really confusing times right now. My best friends accuse me of whistling for dogs, or responding to whistles with my tongue hanging out, every time I try to engage in conversation rather than just blaming Trump or the South for all of our problems.

I don't think I'm a racist. Not really sure it matters what I think is going on inside my own head or heart. Seems like right now, there are plenty of peop!e willing to tell me why I'm a racist. It also seems like their opinion is more important than mine.

This was posted recently with a slight change (changed a double negative not immutable to mutable):
Quote:
Race is a social construct, it's not binary, and it's mutable. Irish immigrants faced horrible discrimination, but now they're white. Chineese immigrants faced horrible discrimination, but now, they're not white, but they're definietely on a rung above black people.
Quote:
mu-ta-ble
adjective
liable to change.
"the mutable nature of fashion"
I suggest that what the portion of the quote I posted indicates that anyone can be called racist for just about anything. Race is subject to change (mutable) and thus what constitutes racism is subject to change. Today's progressive is potentially tomorrow's racist.

So to answer your question what is considered racism has changed and thus the term has been trivialized. Akin to calling someone a nazi that you disagree with. Checking out for the weekend.

All the best

lol. #1 priority and my stand? I was being a glib wise-ass. It actually felt good exercising some virtue signaling over someone for insane reasons, albeit in a joking matter. That power of moral authority..... very intoxicating I must say.

Also, go ahead and point out where I've defended racists ever. And I will mock the idea of 'racism' as the far left sees it, where just not being a racist isn't good enough; I have to champion anti-racist policies at all times. I will just continue to live my life treating every person equal. Thinking that doing this means that I unconsciously support white supremacy is utter nonsense.

Hmm, sounds like you're projecting a bit here. Did someone on Facebook tell you this and make you mad, and now you're taking out your anger in P&S?

Because, like, I'm pretty sure nobody on 2+2 called you out and said "hey Jimmy, I haven't seen you poasting in favor of tearing down statues, you sure you aren't a racist bro?", so it's not clear where this whining about "why can't I just be left alone to not be a racist" is coming from. Like, we were all just doing our thing in here without involving you at all, when you decided to come along completely on your own volition to cry about confederate statues. So the idea that you just wanted to be left alone, but some Woke Mob-sters pulled you into this fight, kinda sounds like bullshit you made up to justify your dumb posting!

"Getting rid of statues is fine." This was the 1st sentence I said in this thread. How is that a pro-Confederate statues stance? If there are referendums to remove Confederate statues from public places, let the voters make the decision and get rid of the statues. It shouldn't be up to an angry mob as to what gets vandalized and torn down. And I felt this wouldn't end with Confederate statues, and was right (Francis Scott Key, Ulysses S. Grant, Hans Christian Heg & the "Forward" statues in Madison). I still think history museums will be put on blast for having Confederate memorabilia and coerced to get rid of rebel artifacts; I really hope I'm wrong about this.

I'm still waiting for proof of being pro-racist btw.....

But most importantly of all, how ****ing dare you say that I read Facebook stuff? This hurts the worst, and I expect a full apology.

lol, this is extremely charitable to what you actually wrote, which is still there, and which you never really defended when we pointed out how ludicrous it was (mostly the followup about comparing to Jews and the Holocaust):

Your "it won't end there" take was not at all "and think of the figures they'll go after next". It was a bizarre, and still very very wrong, take about erasing the memory of the Confederacy from history entirely that invoked George Orwell.

Your work here is at the very least defending the racists who want to honor the legacy of the antebellum South in all its forms.

Did people hear about the group Lady Antebellum changing their name because they thought "antebellum" would offend some people? So they changed it to Lady A. Well it turns out there is a black singer in New Orleans who goes by Lady A and she thought it was offensive or white privileged that a group would change their name without checking first. Hilarious.

Were there any political movements that supported removal of these statues you paid attention to before this "mob" appeared? Were there any noteworthy politicians you recall stating that the removal of these statues should be a priority? Did you care or agree? Did it change your vote or opinion in regards to politics? How many statues were removed due to such political efforts?

These are some decent questions to at least think about, before jumping straight into "either this ends or democracy fails".
