Marines aren't inherently superior beings to non-Marines or Afghani civilians or whoever else. Our crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq have killed hundreds of thousands. I and any other decent human will gladly swap the lives of 13 Americans for thousands of Iraqis, Afghanis and others (I get that it's not that simple; the power vacuum left by our withdrawal will create some violence and deaths as well; but the point easily remains).

ETA: actually no-- 'may' is totally appropriate there. Stephanopoulos asked if the US will give the Taliban aid. Sullivan says that aid should go directly to the people of Afghanistan, then follows it up by saying that the Taliban receiving aid themselves depends on their actions.
