We have the answer: This year, by September 11 at the latest.

The war is officially lost, not that we could really do anything about it. But it's waste to throw any more money, lives or resources into that black hole of a conflict.

Hopefully there won't be too many human rights abuses under future Taliban rule. I assume they won't be rearing to stage international terrorist acts and terrorists after fighting a 20 year war because of Bin Laden.

Officially lost? If the goal was to prevent Afghanistan from being used as a base for attacks within the US it's mission accomplished.

I'm sure women will be treated just fine under the Taliban and there will be gay pride parades all over the place.

..................

the cost of the war was 2 trillion dollars
the cost of the Vietnam war was 863 billion converted to 2019 dollars
there were nowhere near as many U.S. casualties as there were in Vietnam

I also wonder if this new timetable will be again delayed due to pressure on Biden from various angles

the U.S. is again losing face - if you believe the U.S. had any face left to lose

Bin Laden was in Pakistan possibly using it as a base to plan attacks.

Maybe you should have carpet bombed there too just to be sure. I mean yeah i know they're allies and all but still...

I strongly disagree with withdrawing the limited presence we have there. The $2 trillion cost is oft cited but it is without the context of we're already like 90+% out (compared to surge levels) and that much of the cost would be spent elsewhere in Asia to maintain our South Asian presence anyway.

I understand the urge to withdraw completely and put a period on the Afghanistan War. The problem is the war won't end just because we leave. Taliban is still around. Taliban is still working with Al Qaeda (per the UN). In a few years, very likely before Biden's first term ends, we'll be back in Afghanistan to support the Afghan government and/or to clean up another ISIS like disaster.

The real question should be not when will we get out. The real question should be wtf are we doing in Afghanistan. But also wtf are we doing in Iraq, Syria.

The result I see is millions of war refugees swarming away, into Europea and the rest of the world. These good people leaving is destabilizing the countries even more. A couple of "warriors" left back in the land. Nobody knows anymore who's side is who and wtf they are doing. It became very chaotic right?

What happens if we leave, just leave everything? Israel gets attacked and wiped out? Russia and iran will try to dominate the middle east and the Saudis go broke? that's what they are afraid of, right?

Where will they be without women’s rights organizations like NATO and the CIA to help them.

Presumably by being stoned to death for singing, dancing, showing skin, talking back to a man, going to school or having the audacity to be raped.

Boy lots of coverage on Fox, CNN and MSNBC about Afghanistan and how bad it will be when the USA leaves. Military lobbyists will utilize the media to run the narrative we must stay for the humanity of Afghanistan

It will be very, very bad.

Doesn't necessarily mean it is the wrong thing to do, but anyone not thinking we're going to see some horrific things there are deceiving themselves.

will those things be any more horrific than what the Americans have been doing there for the last 20 years? highly doubtful.

Well that's the problem right. You go in, unleash an unholy shitstorm, then when you leave the place somehow manages to be worse off than when you were there. Nato, doing their good deeds, cut and run after destroying libya. And now the place is home to slave auctions and a laundry list of other horrors

The best reasons for withdrawing are internal. You don't want to pay the economic price, you don't want to lose more soldiers, you oppose all war, you don't want to embroiled in the fallout from certain failed strategies and so forth.

All those are understandable political views, and good subject for debate.

But an argument that one should withdraw because it will be "better" for Aghanistan? That's rosy-eyed fantasy. Taliban and other extremist groups have used various stand downs, the political reluctance against military losses in countries participating in Operation Resolute Support, and recent treatises to prepare. They will likely succeed. We're talking about a group that repurposes sports stadiums as execution grounds and demands mandatory attendance as they execute women for disobedience. It will undoubtedly also lead what precious little economy exists to collapse.

The Taliban will also in all likelihood be embroiled in a bitter war of its own, as it battles against other extremist groups about who among them is divinely chosen to oppress the public.
