Biden denounces socialism during visit by Germany’s Angela Merkel

Quote:
President Biden denounced socialism during a Thursday press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, taking a swipe at the ideology that an increasing number of fellow Democrats embrace.

“Communism is a failed system, a universally failed system. And I don’t see socialism as a very useful substitute, but that’s another story,” Biden said in the White House East Room.

Biden denounced the left-wing ideologies in response to a question about Cuba, where the largest anti-government protests in decades erupted Sunday. He separately slammed “phony populism.”

Philip Morris International CEO says cigarettes should be banned and the company will stop selling Marlboros in the UK within a decade

Quote:
The chief executive of Philip Morris International, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes outside the US, said his company would stop selling cigarettes in the UK within a decade.

CEO Jacek Olczak told The Mail on Sunday that the move was part of the company's goal to become smoke-free and to help end the use of traditional cigarettes.

Olczak also called on the UK government to outlaw cigarettes within a decade, comparing them to gas-powered cars, which are set to be barred from being sold in the country starting in 2030, according to The Telegraph.

"We can see the world without cigarettes," he said. "And actually, the sooner it happens, the better it is for everyone. With the right regulation and information it can happen 10 years from now in some countries. And you can solve the problem once and forever."

Philip Morris are behind one of the e-cig brands (IQOS I think) so they're probably thinking about that as their future in the UK. What's usually interesting when tobacco companies make these progressive statements is to look what they're doing in countries with less regulation. I'm sure I remember listening to an interview a few years back on the radio with a high ranking figure from PM talking about how they don't promote smoking, they're just providing a product, etc. and then the interviewer pointing out how their advertising in other countries completely contradicted that.

No idea where this should go but I think it's important for a lot of us to watch and take the lesson to heart.

Why not stop selling Marlboro's straightaway? What's with the "within a decade" garbage?

Good find. Probably wouldn't hurt for those prompting such discussions to watch and take the lesson to heart as well.

John Denver and Cass Elliot are two of my favorite singers ever.

Point of Information: According to the coroner's report, and contrary to the "fake news" of that day, Ms. Elliot did not pass away from choking on a ham sandwich.

Serious topic, I know, but what this guy says starting around 14:45 is pretty funny. Poker analogies aren't for everyone.

Spoiler:
He says he is a professional poker player. He lost. He doubled down, and we trumped him.

Man photographed for Nirvana's 'Nevermind' album cover files child pornography suit

Quote:
In the complaint filed Tuesday, Spencer Elden, 30, states that the image on the 1991 album -- which features him as an infant swimming underwater with his penis exposed as he reaches for a dollar bill -- portrays him "like a sex worker" and has caused him "lifelong damages."

The suit seeks $150,000 from each defendant including photographer Kirk Weddle, surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, as well as Courtney Love, the executor of the estate of the band's late frontman Kurt Cobain, alleging they "knowingly produced, possessed and advertised commercial child pornography."

Original Nirvana drummer Chad Channing is also named as a defendant despite being replaced by Grohl in 1990 before the album was recorded and the cover photography was shot. It further names several existing and defunct record companies that have released or distributed the album in the proceeding decades.

The suit specifically accuses Weddle of producing "sexually graphic images" of Elden "with the goal of enhancing and increasing the commercial success" of the band and the album.
