I'm not an IT professional, but it seems to be that if someone were to spoof your IP, they would have to first know your IP, along with your log in info, and that seems like that's a lot of info for you to have out there and not know.
It's more likely that they are lying to you because they aren't going to lose money out of their pocket because you didn't secure your account, and also if they set that precedent it would be a pretty easy way for them to get angled.
For the record, it's most likely that you got drunk and punted or that someone who lives with you/is staying with you/you gave your info to got drunk and punted. I'm not saying that's what happened here, just that if we're using a predictive model to come up with scenarios, that would be the one.
I'm sure you've been asked this a hundred times by your IT friends, but: does anyone have your log in info? was anyone aside from you in your house at that time? did you use the same username/pw as on other sites? did you download anything odd recently?
