I am fully behind the banning of automated software that allows a person not to actually play themselves. I think the other "assisted" software is such a grey zone.
Some people are for HUDs, some people are against them. I tend to think they're necessary to use in today's games to get to the highest levels. I wouldn't trust any room that bans their use to actually prevent every player from using them. I think the likelihood that there are still players at Global Poker using them is very high despite them being prohibited there.
Even the most advanced HUDs don't tell you the exact play to make and the bet size to use. You still have to become proficient in interpreting the data correctly, which is a skill in itself.
I would be willing to play on a site that prohibits HUD use if it was very soft, but I'd definitely be hesitant to play on any site that doesn't, at the very least, offer hand histories, and preferably with your opponents' names identified in those hand histories.
I don't know if there's any way to stop people with a database of preflop charts from looking at them while they're at the tables if they're doing it manually. If they're using a program to advise them and automatically pull up the charts then I would have a problem with that. That's halfway to being a live solver program.
I tend not to worry about those things. I worry more about the future of bots and live solvers. The future advancements of those two things have the potential to kill poker at every level if not dealt with properly, especially the more easily solvable variants. HU Limit Holdem is solved. HU short-stack NLHE poker is essentially solved. Fixed stack optimal SNG strategy is essentially solved. Hypers and jackpot poker are already overran with live advisors at the higher levels on most sites. Most variants of poker have some form of botting issues on lots of sites, some variants and some sites have way more issues than others.
The only advice I can really give is to give the sites and platforms which do the best job at deterring and removing undesirable software users your action.
I'd love to say this network does a good job in that area, but the truth of the matter is that if I was grading them that they wouldn't receive a passing grade. That's not to say I haven't seen them improve the situation in the past, but they do a poor job at identifying and removing the bots on their own, and even when I do my best to help them not every bot is removed, for whatever reason.
I had hoped that the issue would improve a lot with the presence of this new forum, but it really is the same old song and dance as it was before.
