It's not illegal for you to play. It's illegal for US banks to process payments as per the UIGEA. It is illegal for you to charge a fee for others to play, but not to be paid to promote gambling or poker. The laws are worded and target the lack of transparency for taxation basically.
The only US legal site is Global Poker, except for Washington. Some networks, PS/PP/888/WSOP have paid licensing fees to states which magically makes it safe for players. Basically how the lawmakers word the licensing but it actually just gives them the ability to collect taxes and seize accounts for back taxes.
Other sites like WPN, Betonline, Bovada, Five Dimes, Intertops, and Juicy Stakes all allow US players. Your bank, credit/debit card, and Western Union/Moneygram business will not work with them directly. They will use a third party processor for those payments or just use bitcoin.
