just about all the mains, ACR, Betonline, and Ignition/Bovada. Why don't you read some threads, and download some clients. to decide what you like?

So can I play online poker for real money legally in CA now? And if so where? I've been reading conflicting reports online.

It's not illegal for you to play. It's illegal for US banks to process payments as per the UIGEA. It is illegal for you to charge a fee for others to play, but not to be paid to promote gambling or poker. The laws are worded and target the lack of transparency for taxation basically.

The only US legal site is Global Poker, except for Washington. Some networks, PS/PP/888/WSOP have paid licensing fees to states which magically makes it safe for players. Basically how the lawmakers word the licensing but it actually just gives them the ability to collect taxes and seize accounts for back taxes.

Other sites like WPN, Betonline, Bovada, Five Dimes, Intertops, and Juicy Stakes all allow US players. Your bank, credit/debit card, and Western Union/Moneygram business will not work with them directly. They will use a third party processor for those payments or just use bitcoin.

Great, I was looking at Bovada. Is it safe? I'm basically concerned about doing some illegal and getting caught (which you addressed) and being able to get my money out when I want to.

The risk is virtually entirely on the poker site, from a legal aspect. If your bank finds you are moving money on or off a site that is illegal for them, they could seize your account/funds. Most do not, they opt to ship you the money and close, but they could do that. Go with bitcoin and take the proper steps to avoid and direct movement that violates banking laws. If you want the step by step bitcoin process search for bitcoin threads or ask in the Zoo Chat thread. It seems complicated at first, but once you get the hang of it....4 or 5 clicks and that is it.

Bovada accepts US players, like any site YMMV. No site will be perfect for you, best to figure out what kind of games you have an innate interest in and then seek the site that offers it. All sites have the basic NLHE stuff, most have PLO, fair amount have split pot games, and very few have mixed games. Overall, your money is safe on Bovada. I've played there for over a decade and no issues with moving money around.

This page gives a good simple overview of which states/countries are legal on certain sites:

Intertops updated their TOC:

"REGISTRATION/DISCLAIMER: No sign-ups initiated from Australia, Austria, France and United Kingdom (including British Virgin Islands) will be accepted in the Poker Room. INTERTOPS reserves the right to refuse new registrations from the United States."
https://poker.intertops.eu/en/terms-and-conditions

So now it's the entire US. And I don't know why they day right to refuse instead of no sign ups like the other countries.

Ive found most info online to be outdated, do you have any good sources on up to date laws/restrictions?

A friend of mine in Texas who plays in home games was thinking of using pokerbros/pppoker to run freerolls where he would give away merchandise as the prizes to attract some new customers. He asked me if this would be legal(he has a legit business and can't afford any problems) and I couldn't give him a solid answer. I assume it would be but am not sure.

These blog-posts relate to poker in the UK, using references to the UKGC:

https://www.onlinegamblingwebsites.c...r-money-legal/

https://www.onlinegamblingwebsites.c...y-games-legal/

Is there an equivalent to the UKGC where you could read the relevant rules for the US?

State laws vary, have to check with your local laws.

When I was in NY, I drove to the local precinct and asked if I could host a charity game to award prizes of various value based in player finish. For my area, they said as long as I did not charge a rake, it was legal. My guess is different counties in the state would have different laws.

My advice would be to detail out your intent, then ask an attorney or law enforcement in your area. You could probably call legal aid society and get a pretty accurate response.

The last thing you would want is to rely on some random internet comment when the downside is a legal issue.

If it's free for everyone to play and they just win prizes it's not considered gambling because they're never risking any money. That's similar to bar poker open which is legal in many states including Texas.

The rake on Pokerbros is high but they have some of the best action at those stakes in PLO. I have had some astronomical win rates at 1/2 and 2/4 PLO, that I cannot come even close to on the other sites.

Don't ask people here, go to the sites or email them directly. Someone here gives you wrong info and you get banned and funds seized it is your fault.

Email support@ and ask re the specific software in question.

Don't know if I would trust site off advertised facebook feed. I personally skip the feed, and just launch everything from my page.
