I recently withdrew 15k from ignition through bitcoin to my Coinbase account and I was wondering what I should expect when I withdraw this into my bank account. I guess my question is should I withdraw it in small amounts? Am I going to get hounded by someone about this income and if so what should I tell them? Is it best to just keep it on Coinbase and only take it out if I need it??

I don't think you wanna withdrawal to Coinbase. Someone mentioned itt how they got banned for that. Maybe use the search feature to look for the posts, they were a while back.

I used an intermediate wallet so I should be good on that front.

doesn't matter what increments you WD in, after 10k your gonna have to answer some questions.

And I would imagine you should not keep large amounts of money on coinbase for long.

So what do people typically tell the IRS? Like online gambling is legal right? So I can just tell them I won it playing poker right? Or would that be stupid?

you claim/report it as income and pay whatever taxes you owe on it, it's not rocket science and you aren't going to get help with tax evasion here

Any idea why they would come back?

I’m confused so now bovada is back for everyone?

Maybe they said f it... they won’t touch us. But wasn’t there some thing with Calvin ?

Definitely not trying to evade taxes just wasn’t sure about the nuances of online poker taxes and how to declare it. I guess it isn’t rocket science but I’ve never really declared gambling income.

In general taxes on online poker winnings are more complex then people realize. If you didn't keep detailed records you may run into problems. The other thing to consider is you pay taxes on all amounts you won not just what you withdraw.

For example if you have 25k in total winnings but paid 10k in tourney fees you pay taxes on the 25k. Not the 15k that you withdraw from the site. The only way to deduct losses is if you file as a professional gambler.

If you claim the income on your tax return make sure to have detailed records. I would not recommend trying to evade tax on 15k of income though. There are some very detailed threads on this site where you can learn everything you want on taxes.

This is more of the stuff I was looking for. I’m considering hiring a tax attorney but I’m not sure if they would be familiar with this type of income. I’ll definitely look around the forums for some info! Is there anyway you could point me in the right direction?

I would say the most important thing would be to try and create detailed records of all tourneys and cash games you played in. I would think an excel spreadsheet might work. Without this level of detail a tax attorney would have a hard time.

Just be prepared to be blown away by the amount of income you will need to pay tax on. As an example if you win $100 in a cash game and then lose $100 the next day you still have $100 of income to pay tax on in the governments eyes.

Try the US Income Taxes thread under the Poker Legislation sub forum.

Don’t take advice from random, non CPAs in this forum. Contact a professional CPA. There is already some bad advice here.

The IRS doesn’t care if you’re a drug dealer, hitman, or an online gambler. They want their cut...

The login on Ignition has been very slow this week and haven't been able to access the cashier from the client. Also has been impossible to get to hand histories. Tonight, I was able to log in, but it says cash games are down for maintenance - other stuff seems available. Is that just me? Seems to have happened since the latest "upgrade". When I was able to get on the other evening and get to tables, everything seemed to work okay.
