Let's resume contacting mainstream media to ask them to increase coverage of our issue. Let's contact CBS News today. As they have been critical in the past, especially on 60 Minutes last Sunday (again), let's mention specifically that they need to support our right to play.

It was a rerun that discussed slot machine addiction.

There is a post on the 60 Minutes Facebook wall to which we ought to post our thoughts: http://www.facebook.com/60minutes/posts/130738363684149

Sites can also utilize software tools to identify patterns that indicate compulsive behaviors. In fact, a Harvard study shows that licensed and regulated online poker is better at addressing problem gaming than is prohibition.

Huizenga keeps it local

Reviews were mixed last week after U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga hosted his first town hall meeting on Facebook. The Zeeland Republican got only ten “likes” and several complaints about his failure to address questions about H.R. 2366, a bill that would regulate online poker.

Reach out to media

Getting this issue out in the mainstream press is an important component to building momentum. We've done a lot here with the Facebook actions. Let's continue this by sending letters to the editors of our local papers to praise H.R. 2366, the Online Poker Act, and to encourage lawmakers to support it. Many poker players took this action in the wake of Black Friday and dozens of letters were published! Let’s keep the good work up and send our letters to the editor today.

Also, if you see an online news story about Internet poker, please take a moment to post comment on it (if the story allows for public comments online). The more comments/interest a story receives; the more likely that news outlet will commit more time covering the issue. This is one more easy way for us to get more attention for our fight for our rights.

August Recess an Important Time to Contact Representatives

This week is the official start of the August recess for the U.S House of Representatives. Congress is heading home for the month.

While our reps are back home for the recess, let's all call their district office (click here to find the number) and urge them to support HR 2366, the Online Poker Act of 2011.

You can also urge your Representative to support the bill by clicking here to see if your Representative has a Facebook page. If they do, please take a moment to sign into your Facebook account, click the “Like” button on their page and then post your message asking them to protect your rights to play online poker by supporting HR 2366. You can also check to see if your Representative has a Twitter account by clicking here. If they do, please use the hashtag #poker when sending your tweet.

As you may know, U.S. House and Senate leaders have appointed twelve members of Congress to serve on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. This “super committee" is charged with developing policies to reduce the U.S. deficit and then make specific recommendations to Congress which will be voted on. This is a great opportunity for us to make our voices heard.

Let's go to their Facebook pages and let them know that we want them to take action on the online poker issue! Simply take a moment to sign into your Facebook account, click the “Like” button on the page and then post your message asking them to protect our right to play online poker by supporting HR 2366!

The names with an “x” in front of them are those who do not allow direct posting on their Facebook wall. No problem for us. Just post a comment in response to a post already on the page. PLEASE BE SENSITIVE about this though. If the post says the Congressperson is being treated for cancer, don’t bother them with poker. Tell them to get well soon. Be sensitive to what’s going on in their state, too – wildfires, tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, etc. And PLEASE say please and thank you. Courtesy goes a long way.

Oh, and let’s all try to get the bill number correct. It’s H.R. 2366.

Let's all also remember to revisit these walls to like the posts and comments made since your last visit. Thanks!

I posted the following to many of these walls:

Quote:
Please ask the "super committee" on deficit reduction to support H.R. 2366, a bipartisan bill to license and regulate Internet poker. Licensing will provide strong consumer protections and age verification as well as billions of dollars in federal and state revenue. Every federal dollar wasted on efforts to stop American adults from playing online poker is another dollar added to the federal deficit. Please support my freedoms by supporting this bill. Thank you.

Monday's Action: Tell Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) to Push the Debt Super Committee to Include Online Poker Legislation

As you may know, U.S. House and Senate leaders have appointed twelve members of Congress to serve on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction. This debt "super committee" is charged with developing policies to reduce the U.S. deficit and then make specific recommendations to Congress which will be voted on. This is a great opportunity for us to make our voices heard.

Let's all go to committee member Rep. Jeb Hensarling's Facebook page today and and let him know that we want the super committee to take action on the online poker issue!

Simply take a moment to sign into your Facebook account, click the “Like” button on the page and then post your message asking him to protect our right to play online poker by supporting HR 2366! Here's the Facebook post on which we should comment. Please "like" the other pro-poker posts there as well.

So far, the pro-poker post with the most "likes" has 32 "likes". Let's bump this to 100+. So, we need 68 more people who care about their rights to volunteer to take this simple action.
