Poker Stars Account Hacked Poker Stars Account Hacked

I just had my account hacked, $110 was dumped at the table to another account. I've never played for much money online but turned my initial $10 into $110 grinding micro level cash games. Obviously this isn't a lot of money and a small amount compared to what some others have lost, but it is the principal of the matter which bothers me.

Stars Security says that the password was compromised on my end and they could only recover $10. I run pretty tight security on my lap top and regularly sweep for malware and other hacks and have found nothing. I haven't played on poker stars in about 2 months and haven't logged in to the account in that time so if there was a hack on my end it would have happened months ago, if that were the case why did the hacker wait two months to take the money? Apparently the hacker logged in and registered for a $1/2 game and dumped the entire bankroll to another player in one hand. He was at the table for 2 minutes. (I have never played stakes even close to 1/2). The person logged in from somewhere in Kazakstan and played a stake I have never played and dumped the money to another account. They should be able to retrieve my money simply by taking it from the account the hacker dumped it to? It seems like a no brainer, but Stars says there is nothing I can do. Any thoughts or suggestions on what action I should take?

Thanks

Well the classic one do you use the same password with any other sites?

The money is allready cashed out. They could give the account negative balance and pay you but that ain't happening.

Get a stronger password, change every password that you have and find the leak(I guess your password for PS was the same with one of your other passwords).
Hackers usually take down a whole site with registration emails, passwords and usernames and try the same password for same or similar nicknames/emails.
Get an authenticator if you want to keep some balance in your account.
Find the other account that got your money.
Ask them to investigate both accounts and to check the hand.
In the past I have reported some people for collusion and after a week I got reimbursed and their accounts locked. In my experience I can say that they take these cases very seriously.
Maybe they want to reimburse only 10$ because the rest was a bonus deposit which was not staked enough or is expired.
You can try to contact a PS representative via this forum.(maybe Keith from PS software thread).
If nothing is resolved, don't be too upset-yes,it is real money and it is the principal but like you said it's a relatively small sum and at the end it is your fault for not protecting your account because Stars was not hacked.
Hope you get your money back.

On this, it seems likely that you and PokerStars have the same preference: both them and you would be better off if the money was returned to you. That is, they're better off with the money in your (legitimate player) account, than having been taken by some fraudster.

Given that both you and them want the same thing here, and given that they're saying that they can't do it, it is likely that they have a legitimate reason to not be able to return the money to you.

That legitimate reason is likely that the money has already been cashed out and taken from the PokerStars system. That obviously harms you, but it (perhaps not obviously) harms PokerStars as well as described above.

If you want to pursue this further, then you could report this to a local law enforcement agency, in whatever way you would otherwise report $100 being stolen from you. There's nothing special about the internet that allows people to steal money from you without facing criminal consequences for those actions.

At the end of the day, while PokerStars should* try to recover your stolen money and get it back to you, at the end of the day, you appear to a victim of a crime, and thus, should treat this in the same way as any other criminal act: by reporting it to your local law enforcement agency. They're the people who are responsible for catching criminals, PokerStars isn't the police of the internet or the world.

*and, to the best of my knowledge, does.

(By the way, while this specific thread in this context of talking about PokerStars, everything I've written in this post could equally apply to any other poker site - while I used to work for PokerStars, there's nothing specific about them here)

People travel but if the user logs in from Kazahstan (or some other exotic country) there should be some kind of security check like sms code or sth. Not applicable to Stars alone but to other sites as well.

Hi AJTS. I have just had the same thing happen to me. I received an email from Pokerstars security 2 days ago saying my account had been accessed on a new device. I tried logging in and got a message saying my account has been frozen. I emailed PS and they sent me a very long email informing that no money could be recovered (with no explanation about where the money has goner) and stating that if I want to reinstate my account I have to send them all sorts of ID. I have requested a transaction history on my account from PSS for the last 12 months. Am waiting a response. Had about $600 in the account. PS position is that I have compromised my log-in details. I can't see how that could have happened, as I take similar precautions to those you described. Not happy.

PokerStars already offers this an optional feature, but should promote it more heavily: https://www.pokerstars.com/poker/roo...smsvalidation/

This is a reasonable tactic. I also think its a way for PS to fish for more marketing methods in the future, I would have to read the Terms to know if they would use this for that purpose or not.

How about a quick auto email feature? Would accomplish the same without the additional disclosure on the part of the player.

Does "quick auto email feature" mean "automatically email the player when their account is access from a new device"? I think that you'll find that PokerStars already does this.
