Since when did banks start charging for depositing foreign checks? I got charged 5 dollars on a check I just deposited. Wtf.

According to what was reported they weren't supposed to be allowing either. Maybe they decided that not allowing new sign ups was good enough?
In my opinion, either somebody broke the story with incorrect information and everybody else just copied that (I have a professional background in media and know that this happens more often than many believe) or Bovada changed that aspect of the policy shortly after the news broke. For what it's worth, I contacted them almost immediately after the story broke, and they told me that I could still deposit if I wanted to ("We’ve only stopped accepting new player from Nevada; however, deposit and payout options are still open for existing accounts that currently reside in Nevada"). Either way, I don't think that they are purposefully hiding this information, but whatever. At least I now sort of understand why I tried to correct incorrect information from being spread here and essentially get ignored instead.

I have only had it happen to me twice in 5 years. Each time it happened my bank made funds available the next day...Then it took about 3 weeks later for the check to come back bounced and the money was taken out of my account balance...some people get the check back bounced in 1 week. but it can take up to a month I believe. hope this helps

Also bovada took care of all issues and fees and I was issued a good check immediately.

exactly
a bank making funds available does not mean a check actually cleared

Just received two checks on the same day, one from the north and one from the east, from two different shipment carriers. One will need to be deposited via teller, the other via atm. My bank is bitty shank, longstanding account in good standing. Also, I just moved so my new branch doesn't know me yet. My old branch was always cool with the northern checks. Advice? My plan is to first go to teller and then go to atm. Assuming not a good idea to hand both checks of same amount to teller.

What type of pre-paid visa card do I need to get to deposit on Bovada cause none of my banks debit card or credit card work?

I just wanted to share my Bovada cashout story.
Bovada sent me my check within 2-3 days of requesting a cashout, so props to Bovada. The check was in US dollars. I have a checkings account at one of the biggest Banks in America. Their ATMs refused my check on account of it being a foreign check. So I took it inside to try to deposit it. The teller didn't question the check, the deposit was successful, and he told me the funds would be available in a day.
So I would just say don't be nervous about depositing your check in person.

You literally just repeated what this whole thread has said a million times AND posted bank names. That's just downright impressive.

Requested 7/27
Received 8/4 from North

Also advice for dark_horse...
In general if you start a new bank account and attempt to deposit an amount that is large or uncharacteristic of your average deposit, or deposit a foreign/international check the bank will put a hold on it. If you attempt to deposit at the ATM into a new account chances are the machine will automatically put a hold on it if it does accept it. I have around 3 years of experience in retail banking but I think the best plan for establishing a solid reputation would be to deposit at the window and let the teller know that they are international checks in USD. The decision to put a hold will fall largely on your relationship with your bank (average balance, how long the account has been open, how many overdrafts you've had) and the tellers experience with handling foreign checks. Some banks have different processing requirements and a teller with no experience may have to ask a supervisor how to process the check. Usually the teller will say something like "Oh it's a foreign check" when she's trying to process it and it's not going through and I'll say something like "Oh yeah I'm a website developer and this was one of my clients in Canada". I've probably deposited 30+ checks and have had zero put on hold/collections. I've also had my account at a major bank for 8+ years and haven't attempted to deposit in my local credit union because of stricter deposit regulations.

Great advice. However like I said I've been with my bank for a long time as well, but the people at my new branch just don't know me yet. Anyway I went to the teller, she was friendly and all was fine, then I went to the atm and deposited the check from the east. Wondering if that behavior in itself is more suspicious than just handing her both checks of the same amount from two different countries.

The atm deposit is already showing as available in my account and the teller deposit hasn't posted yet even as a transaction without available funds.

Almost all deposits take one business day to appear in your account if there's no hold whether it's at the ATM or at the teller window. Also if you've been with your bank for a long time that's much more relevant than the people at your new branch "knowing" you. Your bank history (member since 'xx, avg balance, and accounts) all come up in 99% of bank's software and that information will be the factor in deciding to place a hold or not rather than if you come in once a week and talk with the tellers.

Follow up on my frozen check from the north.. after about a week or two the deposit cleared and my banked charged me $15. Kinda annoying and I feel like contacting bovada about this even though there's probably no compensation.

Req: 8/3/14
App: 8/4/14
Rec'd: Today, 8/8/14

Not bad at all. This is my 4th check i received in about 2 months. I bank with Red Wht n Bloo bank. My first 3 checks were available the next day after depositing, but they were all less than 1000$. My question is, does anyone have luck with deposits over 1000$ not getting sent to collections?
I cashed out 2 checks back to back for 6xx.xx a piece hoping i would get two seperate checks and they put it on one. Hoping this goes good considering my bank would know the past ones were successful.

Got a question:

I requested a cashout in the 3rd. It was approved a few ours later.
I just got the tracking number.

It is from FedEx and it is currently in Yankees/Mets State.

My question: does this always mean that the check is from the North rather than the East? If DHL was the carrier, would that mean East.

I expect to get the check Monday, so I'll know for sure, but I was just wondering if the carrier signifies the origin of the check.

Me

7/15 Check actually in-hand (lol @ me for not noticing FedEx left it at our side door on 7/9 without asking for a signature; surprised it was still there.)
7/31 Check deposited at the patriotic snake bank, no questions asked

The check came from up north. It's a new bank account (less than a month old; I actually opened it since I had no other safe way of cashing this check). Waited this long to deposit it so I could let a direct deposit from my primary job come in so there's at least some sort of prior activity. Will update whether it clears or goes into collections or something else.
Maybe i'm dense, which bank is this. BOA? Hugh S. Bank?

I can tell you are living life wrong by this statement. You seem to think that the only way to get what you want is to complain about it. I have talked to companies in a polite way about mistakes or just generally asked to pay less for items even though no special deal was posted. I'd say I have saved at least $20,000 in my life doing this and it has taken barely any time.

Yeah it's from up north. Every check I got is from north and they all say origin was Zoo cork.
