Were you able to use a prepaid card, or did you have to go with a debit or credit card?

I recently got a check from Singapore for $3000 that was some kind of weird "Deposit Only" check and when I took it to my bank which is a state wide bank they said they would have to send a scan to security to make sure they were good with depositing it and then they would call me and tell me if they could do it. I did that, then got a call a few hours later saying that it could be cashed, but they would have to place a 7 day hold on it, so I said OK, that will work.
About an hour later I got a call from the bank manager asking for more information on the check and I said it was for online consulting work and they said "what kind?" I said I can't say and then they said well we are not going to be able to cash this so we will be sending the check back to you and we will also be closing your account and no longer offering our services to you.
Needless to say I am a little pissed.

They did you a favor. I wouldn't want to give my business to such incompetence.

Probably "IT consulting" or "Financial consulting" is your best bet. Vague enough to not just be lying, and specific enough that they should stop asking followups. They are concerned about money laundering... so "I can't say" is a pretty bad answer.

Get an account with a national bank... they are better anyway.

Howdy:

I had other things going on, so haven't been playing much poker the last 15 months. At that time, I was cashing out regularly. As I recall, it took about 10-15 days to get a check. Also, I had one bounce (from up North, not from that Singalong place).

I am now back playing and ready to cash out a bit.

I've been reading some recent posts. Is it true that checks now take just a few days (I live in the Midwest)? Are there still a few check bouncing issues?
Incidentally, I have had success depositing checks in my local credit union, where I have banked for many years and have more than enough on deposit to cover any of my Bovada checks. I assume that should still work, or has the landscape changed?

Do the checks still come from North and ...EAST? Is EAST still better? I assume we can't choose where the check comes from?

Checks come super quick now... You may wanna open a checking account at a major bank to avoid potential delays though. East checks generally work in atms and North you need to go inside.

Why would you when checks come in basically the same time frame, are for 3x as much, and aren't nearly as expensive to to get?

Generally a few days, yeah. Mine usually take 2-3 days or so before they're approved and mailed, but lots of people reporting same day or next day. There's only been 1 (maybe 2, but I'm guessing they were the same person) report lately (prob last 3-4 months) of a check bouncing that I remember in this thread. There were a couple batches before that, but that's always a risk when a company has to use various payment processors.

Theres no need to open a account if your expecting to get a check at least once every couple of months.
Yes. My first ever checked I received from bovada I took to my small, local bank. I was nervous, but I figured it would be ok. Well the teller did not ask any questions about the check, but she said since it is from Canada we usually send to collections, but that it should clear in 7 days. Well about a week and a half passed by and the check still did not clear, so I went in myself and asked. Another gal called her boss and said they are working on it and they will clear it now. What they did not tell me was that there is a $13 fee, which is not a huge deal, but I was still pissed they did not tell me about the fee. I said enough with this bullship I am going to a national bank.

I got a checking account with a national bank here in my city and have deposited checks from bovada several times with NO issues, fees, etc. I don't even go inside, I just go through the drive through. Easy. So glad I got out of that small bank.

just a heads up for anyone incase they deal w idiot tellers and checks from up north

deposited one today at the green bank with letters for a name
they have 8 digit routing numbers instead of 9
bimbo teller couldnt figure it out telling me the software couldnt find the routing number, neither could 3 other people
they ended up calling the bank on the check trying to verify it wasting about an hour of my time
at least 5 times i mentioned it's candian so the routing number is only 8 digits

finally some guy gets back from break and sees 3 tellers at one computer, asks what the problem is and when they tell him he takes the check, enters it into the system and it goes through fine

they ask him what he did and he entered a dash after the 4th number

so if any of you have the same problems make sure they enter the dash

i used to cling to this method like it was superior. then i waited 17 days for a WU xfer to be approved. meanwhile people were getting checks for free or for 66% less and in 66% less time.

checks are the way to go!

unless you can pull off a max wire with around 150-200 in fees. Usually takes a week.

So my bank called me and left a message that they need to "discuss my last deposit". I see it has probably bounced or at least it's frozen, was from up north. It was a very small check. Hopefully bovada can fix this quickly.

I will be returning from a trip soon and will have 4 checks from Bovada to deposit (received 1 per week the last 4 weeks). I am wondering what the safest way is to deposit these 4 checks when I get back. I am thinking of depositing one every other day and alternating the bank branch where I deposit. For example, Day 1- Branch A, Day 3- Branch B, Day 5- Branch A, Day 7 - Branch B. Does anyone have any opinions? I've never had any problems depositing at this bank in the past, but am somewhat worried that the frequency of these upcoming deposits will trigger some type of suspicious activity protocol.

i dont think it matters as far as spreading out branch a from branch b

just deposit 1 at branch a on day one and one at branch be the same day

after that really depends on the particular banks
I know the bank that rhymes with mace sends foreign checks to collections if there is more than 5k outstanding (and they actually take a few weeks to clear)
when they do this they charge 40-80 dollars

if your bank doesnt do this i'd probably just deposit 2 at each bank on the same day
