There is obvioulsy risk involved. At the same time a lot of players have decided it's worth the risk to play the game they love, to earn a living, or to supplement an income.
If you are considering playing, do your research on the sites available. No matter which site you choose, keep the minimum amount online that is necessary to play the stakes you play. In fact, I am underolled on the sites I play, but I have a separate Bank Account for my Bank Roll. I would much rather prefer to have to make an extra deposit, then have my whole Bank Roll tied up.
In the end, nobody knows what's going to happen. The best we can do is to take certain precautions to limit the amount of risk we're taking.

Honestly, your not going to find software that is close to Tilt, IMO.
I think Merge(Black Chip, RPM, Lock, Carbon) have the best software, but they are currently not accepting US players.
I think the next best would probably be Everleaf Software(Minted Poker and RaiseAndFold). They are not comparable to Tilt, but again nothing in the current US market is. Also, they have a new Poker Client planned to be released within the next month or two. Currently you can only play a maximum of 8 tables on Minted/RaiseAndFold, but that is one of the many changes the new software is supposed to change.
Some may like Cake's software better than Everleaf, but I'm not one of them.
Again, your not going to find anything close to Tilt, especially with Merge not accepting US players.
