I think this game has potential to be the next worldwide gambling "poker boom".

does anybody know where i could research the following:
for the hong kong mahjong variety, is there a big skill edge?
is it possible to sustain a decent hourly winrate without a massive roll?

I play a bit and it has a ton to do with luck, but there is skill involved. The variance is sick

prob couple problems would be that since only 4 players and 1 wins per round...would be very easy to collude...

also I would guess that the edge may be more than you think....I play probably less than once a year but when I do it is just for kicks with some regs....and believe me they never lose...

Big on the jewish Cougar circuit. Let me know, I can direct you to a bunch of games where my old friends play and have their strollers and crying kids in the other room.

Then we need a transitional game to draw them in.

Perhaps Texas No-Limit Mahjong, complete with community tiles and blinds.

Or PS and FTP could open online Mahjong sites, with links and deposit bonuses to the exotic and decadent "imperialist running dog" poker sites.

And free English lessons, imo.

This. It's a 4 player game and 2 colluders would see half the tiles. It is also a game where you can pick up other people's discards. You would need some sort of identity masking system and other safeguards for this to work, so you basically would have no prior reads on anyone.

I always thought mahjong was a one player game where you must bear off tiles in pairs? How does it work ina multiplayer setup?

that's not mahjong, that's mahjong solitaire
real mahjong is played to make a fourteen card hand composed of a pair, and four three card combinations that are either straight flushes or trips (4x3 + 2 = 14)

LOL, this is the result of hundreds of software companies producing different versions of a solitaire game and incorrectly calling it Mahjong.

Sort of like book publishers making people believe Sudokus and Kakuros are some kind of new Japanese puzzle craze.

An American is credited with the creation of Sudokus, and they were first published by Dell Magazines; Kakuros are also said to have first been published by Dell. I've been doing these puzzles under their original names of Number Places and Cross Sums for probably 20+ years.

Won't work online for meaningfull stakes as colluding is too effective. Same problme with bridge and may other games.

Colluding is relativly indeffectivly in online holdem which makes such a good online game and likely to stay the course.
