I'm not sure how many folks who are serious pay attention to the chat screen at most sites/tables... but if a player sat down and asked for a bot check (i.e., "what skin are you playing on? where is everyone playing at?") through a chat window, would you oblige? IMO if anything with "internet" poker, you would at least know you are playing with a real player so it really wouldn't be a tell if you answer? thoughts?

is this a real question?

of course it's a real question... with the atmosphere of current online poker, a "gentleman's agreement" that you are IN FACT playing a real person (by answering the "for the sake of conversation") question I asked about...

So you're asking who responds in chat? It seemed like that's what you were getting at, but your last post kind of confuses me. The answer is of course that some people do, and some people don't. Probably a lot less that do when you consider that the more tables people play, the less likely they are to respond.

Basically, chat responses will always be a poor indicator of whether someone is a bot. Especially when you'd be clearing people who run bots but are present at their computer(s) to respond.

damn "present at the computer bots" ... FWIW I need to do more research on bots before I post this kind of question on a major board... I thought it was just a program that "ran and did its thing"

thanks Bobo Fett

I've never seen a bot play on a poker client, but i have in video games, i'm going to assume they're very similar. Like Bobo said, in most video games at least, you'd be able to see exactly what's going on, and be able to turn the bot off at any moment, aswell as chat while it's doing its thing.

Other than that, i usually respond, i'm sure many (who aren't bots) don't however. Just like many bots also wouldn't. So yeah, it's pretty much never going to prove anything.

Player and observer chat is disable when I play, so I wouldn't even see it.

Many people, especially multi-tablers, don't reply to chat at all no matter what or have chat turned off

speaking of bots , this guys on Lock is up 90k at midstakes plo since Feb 22nd 2013 and he is playing %42 of hands over 122k hands . can someone tell me how this is possible?

What does his % of hands played and how much he's up have to do with botting?

% of hands played wasnt really relative to botting theory , just a surprising stat to have and keep on crushing and winning with such consistency

If we are calling "midstakes" like 200PLO and 400PLO, being up 90K in a month is possible.

I have been accused of being a bot before. my sn actually had "bot" in it. I didn't respond when someone asked me if I was a bot. I just typed "error code 010101101010"
Not sure what the person believed.

You aren't really giving much game detail but do you realize the variance in plo? Especially HU/6max mid-highstakes, swings are massive...

As far as whatever op is talking about, I always have the info tab open on all tables during sessions. Rarely have chat open unless crazy spots/hands happen and I want to see what info everyone is giving away talking about it. Also sometimes when I feel like being friendly or trolling fellow regs

122k hands is nothing, and 42% probably not that high if he plays well post

sounds like the exact opposite of how a bot would play

If someone can program a poker bot it wouldn't be to hard to program it to reply in chat boxes ask 'what skin are you playing on?'

I must admit to having done things like this in the past. Nothing like giving yourself a good laugh 10 or 12 hours into a sick grind.

I would google random programming code errors and copy/paste it into chat (but not when fish asked, when dumb regs did it, always be kind to fish!!!)

True, but (and asking questions in chat is a lousy idea as many don't even have chat displayed) you'd have to consider all sorts of questions and weird phraseology.

e.g. "Is two 'nd 3 four?"

These are the type of robot screeners that are being used as a more intelligent method than Captcha which can be almost impossible for humans but quite easy for some programs.

But this type of auto screening will never work for anything were the rewards are such that you can pay someone just to answer the screens.

So probably OK for stopping people automatically joining a forum site with dozens of names but just about useless to stop people registering multiple accounts for freebies or ... validating poker players.

imo this is a pretty dumb idea anyway. while botters are less likely to actually sit at the computer, they're more likely to read the msg and respond than the average masstabler. besides, some people don't want to chat. there are people with who you can have a nice chat while getting 150 hands/hr, which is fine. i can give u 600 hands/table hr if u can keep up as long as u dont need me to waste time saying "nh" "ty" "how is it to live in xxx" etc, since chatting breaks my concentration. fwiw i imagine people like me are more abundant in the poker world than chatty multitablers
