I played at PokerStars a lot during the poker Boom of 2003-2006. Every time I was there there was a minimum of 100,000 players online and at their peak in 2009 they reached over 300,000 players online. As you can see below currently there are 12,747 players online. Almost 90% shave from when I played in mid 2000s and almost 97% shave from their peak in 2009. Why has online poker cliff dived so much?

the amaya period was uber terrible and was a huge setback for them. they did so much damage to the site and their reputation. they made so many bad decisions including some pretty unethical stuff.. was crazy what a contrast between amaya period and before......
since then management seems to be a lot better again, but gg has surged in dominance, also regulation has been extremely tough (more taxes, way less jurisdictions they can operate in, etc)

They had 3 WSOP World Champions including Moneymaker. Amazing they blew it. What is this GG Poker? Who is behind that?

One huge factor is back in those days there weren't the same country restrictions on the site that there are now. Back in those boom times the site was full of Spanish, French, Italians, Russians and most importantly, Americans. All of them have either been banned or siloed off into their own regional versions of the site.

Lots of threads about this already, and about Stars. You don't need to start a thread to have discussions; you should try posting in existing threads now and then.
