The word blitz was around long before 1939.
Just because doughnuts make you think of Dunkin does not mean that all doughnuts are Dunkin related. Doughnuts were here first and can't help that their name has been hijacked by Dunkin in your mind.
Heh, seems we're off on a bit of a sidetrack here, but since this is just a thread of idle speculation about something in the indeterminate future, I guess there's no big harm.
You're both talking about the German words. The fact that "blitz" was a German word long before "blitzkrieg" doesn't mean it's use in English couldn't have come from a shortening of "blitzkrieg". That seems to be where dictionaries believe it came from, and it makes sense to me - "blitz" doesn't mean flash or lightning in English. One meaning is a quick attack, like a...blitzkrieg. As a matter of fact, I believe every English definition of the word can in some way be related to a blitzkrieg, but not to flash or lightning.
Regardless, my original point stands either way. Blitz being a poor choice for a name because it might make people think of the blitzkrieg is silly IMO, as is the assertion that it "should" make you think of a quick chess match.
