Playing online poker on the road

So I'm probably in the minority here, but my job is basically traveling to different places and I have a lot of dead time when I'm there. I don't have unlimited data, and I don't feel great about logging in to play on unsecured connections.
My current carrier is t-mobile but they kind of suck honestly, so I don't know if upgrading to unlimited data and trying to use my phone as a hot-spot is a good idea. Has anybody else tried this?
What is the best option for me if I want to play online poker? I was thinking a VPN or a private mobile connection would prob be best. Although I might be breaking some sites' T.O.S. by using a VPN.

Don’t play on the road. You will get run over and will damage your computer

It might help if you stated the site/s you play on and the countries to which you travel.
To be certain, it would probably be better and safer for your money if you asked the Support of the relevant site/s.
