I never played online poker back in the "poker boom" days, but just by curiousity I was wondering what the comparison to players then to now is. I know stars can peak at 190k, and fulltilt at 100k, but I was wondering if these numbers were relatively low compared to back in the day, especially party poker. Thanks.

I've been playing online since 1999 and the numbers for Full Tilt are much higher - same with Poker Stars.

The BIG difference is that the play is WAY WAY tougher.

Stars was always hard but most sites you could find many games with 40-50% flop rates.

There were times you could play $10/20 limit in 60% flops and 2/4 45% was the norm.

Plus - no more free money - I was making $3000 a year not even trying with bonuses.

The number of players on tilt and stars is higher now because most of the U.S. players are concentrated their. I'm not sure if the total number players online is higher though. Players are better today by far.

I miss Pacific Pokers $17 avg .25nl rooms and 60% per flop all the way to the top. And those were the crappy tables.

in mid 2005, Party was the biggest site around followed closesly PS. I remember Party having 75 to 80K users logged on in peak hours of the weekend. Stars hovered around the 65K mark. now that stars is the biggest site around, they easily surpass the 200k mark in peak hours. i saw 235k on PS the day they were breaking the Guiness world record.

depend on how they count it though. If you play 9 tables count as 9 people then number much higher just because of people play 12 or 16 tables nowaday.
Backthen the most you can play was 4 table on party, and not too many people can do so. Now very much evenone can do 4 tables and up same time.

I remember sometime in summer of 2003 I think when people thought it was amazing when Party peaked at 15k or something.

I started around Jan of 2003 and thought it was amazing on Stars when they would peak over 2k on weekends. "Isn't this incredible?!?! 2k people on the same site at the same time!!!" Seriously. I would be somewhat disappointed when they would dip under 1k on late weeknights.

I think WSEX still think it's incredible.

The amount of players have increased from 2007 to 2008 at least,

Bums on seats != # of players.

Waaaaay more multitablers than there were before, so 80k players back in the days of 4-table max Party is likely to be alot more than 200k players in the days of 24-tabling Stars.

below is what pokerstars had to say about this. so it appears that the no. of players online might have trippled over the past 4 years or so

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us.

When the lobby states that there are 150,000 players then these are single players, e.g. accounts logged in at that time. These are Real and Play money accounts. As such, one player playing on, let's say ten tables, will count as one.

Thank you for choosing PokerStars and please contact us again if we can
assist you again. We are here for you 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Regards,

Mitch

don't make me cry - it was the only true free money I've ever seen - well - except for the Absolute 25% play 2 hands bonus where all you had to do was leave your money in for 30 days.

Old Paradise had a reload bonus that cleared by just sitting out at a table.
I think it took them a day to fix it.
Twas the dawn of sh tables.

The traffic has increased without a doubt. That being said, the competition is tougher, and the diversity of sites has decreased.

TBH, I think poker sites were considered even more "shady" in 2004, just because they were still "relatively" new. While the amount of complaints is still high today, I think it keeps less people from trying it than it used to.
