Planing to buy a flat screen mainly to watch TV/movies, but would like to have the option to 4-table on it once in a while.

Assuming both are 1080p, what's better for poker LCD or PLASMA???

LCD have better contrast but it's probably not a factor when it comes down to online poker.

It's not as simple as saying plasma or LCD. There are good LCDs, bad ones, and everything in between. Same for plasma.

Just watch out for bad opinions about plasma. The technology has improved greatly over the last few years, but people still speak of problems that no longer exist.

Contrast ratio is marketing BS. There isn't an industry standard (yet) so companies can and will fudge contrast numbers. Consumer Reports did an investigation on the subject that you may be able to find.

Also, LCDs cannot display true black while plasma can. A quality plasma screen should always have better contrast than LCDs for this reason. There are many advantages to LCD technology, but contrast isn't one of them.

I would go for LED, if not affortable LCD. I play on my Sony LCD every once in a while and love the thing.

I got it at the sony outlet store for a much better price than bestbuy etc would give me. Do some research and make sure you see the picture at a store before you buy.

I have mine hooked up to a IBM thinkpad minidocking station for ease of use, this way I just pop my thinkpad in and off I go.

Plasma has a heat problem from what I have been told. I run LCD/LED and the screen is about room temperature...

For those of you that play on your TV, have you used an Xbox controller for Full Tilt? If so what's the best way to set it up?

I 1 table HUSNG's so it would be sweet to do this.

I don't have an xbox, and don't even know how this s*** works, but I do play mainly husngs. In theory could you program this xbox controller to assign a specific size bet to a unique button? e.g. one for pot, another for 3/4, 1/2, etc????

one VERY IMPORTANT thing not being mentioned or brought up in this thread that everyone should consider when buying a monitor or TV for something like this:

YOUR EYES

if you are going to be grinding long days staring at a screen potentially for years and years, you should definitely look into what is best for your eyes particularly long term. ....you dont want to have problems later on just because you were grinding poker and were too worried about the specs and size of your monitor.

here just a quick search found stuff like this.....you should really look into this further if your spending serious hours playing poker each day; especially if its what you do for a living.

LCD
- S-pva or S-IPS (178 degree viewing angle is what you want), stay away from TN LCDs, even though they are still way better then CRT and probably Plasma as well, latter is not at all suited for static pictures.
- make sure you are OK with how small the pixel size is, IMO 24" 1920x1200 is perfect, 27" 2560x1440 is a bit small and so is 30" 2560x1600, but latter is basically your only option for going really big
- be ready to pay some money for these, 24" with quality S-PVA or S-IPS matrix is about 450USD+, 27" 900USD and 30" 1.1k+
- if you need to save some money get 3x 22" E-IPS screens (Dell makes em) and another video card for 3 monitor setup, you should be able to get them for less then 250USD each
-another cost saving alternative is 32"+ quality LCD TV with S-PVA or S-IPS, but since those only go up to 1920x1080 res you better play on poker client like Stars which can be costumized enough to make use of such smal res on so big a screen, also make sure its true 1080p LCD TV, this is very important. As for screens in LCD TV, they are the same as what you get in monitors just different size and colour calibration

Well as far as I know all plasmas still have burn in issues so something static will show after the image changes. For example when I watch certain channel on plasma for a long time channels logo will still be ghosted on the screen for a while, after I change a channel.

Anyhow wiki has some info on the subject:

Plasmas do have burn in, but so do CRT's and LCD's. You keep anything on long enough with a static image, it will at one point or another cause permanent damage.

What you're seeing though tends to be image retention, which is not the same thing. That will go away sooner or later. It really depends upon the monitor you use, and not the technology. I have a Pioneer Kuro (which is typically considered a good TV), and that takes awhile to get image retention. My iMac and Dell monitor, both of which are LCD's, the iMac being LED backlit, have horrible image retention in comparison.

Forget about true black, contrast ratio, etc. Even Plasma's don't have true black. But they tend to display better dark colors, just like LCD's display brighter colors.

The one area where LCD's do shine over Plasmas is in the cost of electricity. This can add up to a few hundred a year, depending upon your usage. More money to play with I say!

LCDs don't burn in. Sometimes you might see an afterimage, but it is temporary and harmless, unlike plasma burn-in.

Plasma burn-in is a lot less of a problem than it used to be, but it can still happen especially if used as a monitor.
