Well, it's too late now, cause I see you already made the trade, but to answer your question, yes, there is a possibility of having something like this come back on you. Probably not to the point of losing your 3.5K, but at least to the point of getting your access to stars blocked for awhile while they investigate your relationship with the trader.
This would only be the case if the person you traded with deposited with a stolen credit card or disputed a deposit he made with a legit card, or won his money on Stars using collusion, or depositing with an eCheck which later turns bad or something like that.
So, yes, even if the other guy sends first, it's best to do your homework on him. I've made about 10 or so succesful trades where the other guy sends first, for amounts from 100 - 1K, but each time, I checked out the other guy's credentials first and nothing has come back on me yet. I'm hoping that these cases where it does happen are rare.
