Well, it's too late now, cause I see you already made the trade, but to answer your question, yes, there is a possibility of having something like this come back on you. Probably not to the point of losing your 3.5K, but at least to the point of getting your access to stars blocked for awhile while they investigate your relationship with the trader.

This would only be the case if the person you traded with deposited with a stolen credit card or disputed a deposit he made with a legit card, or won his money on Stars using collusion, or depositing with an eCheck which later turns bad or something like that.

So, yes, even if the other guy sends first, it's best to do your homework on him. I've made about 10 or so succesful trades where the other guy sends first, for amounts from 100 - 1K, but each time, I checked out the other guy's credentials first and nothing has come back on me yet. I'm hoping that these cases where it does happen are rare.

And then you've got the 'impostor' scam. I answered this question, for a fellow named Walter a while ago, but the answer may be instructive to you. It seems that somebody unknown to Walter sent Walter some money, and he asked what he should do:

You should post the fellow's name. You might, and might not, send the money back immediately.


If there is not something shady involved, well then, no harm, no foul. Suppose you post my name: "hey, everybody: abominable sent me twenty bucks, and I didn't even ask him for trade." ....and then you sent me back my twenty bucks. I'm somehow supposed to be so embarrassed that I dont want the twenty back? I dont think so. Because you sent the money back to EXACTLY THE ACCOUNT WHO SENT IT TO YOU. On the same poker site.

There is an 'impostor' scam running around. Pay attention: it's hard to keep up. The Impostor is always in the middle, and always lying, to the victims on each end of the middle.

I am an impostor: I AIM, or ICQ, or MSM, to you, and say that I am AA. (I am NOT. I'm an impostor. I can't Private Message to you, and say that I am AA, because I'm really not AA). You, you dummy, believe that I am AA. And at my request, you send money to DD, which I have told you is my account. It's not. But that's what I have told you. Meantime, I have been talking to CC: and I have arranged a trade with CC, and told him to send to Walter, and I, Walter (I'm not him: I'm an impostor), will send the money right back, on the other poker site. (usually, but not always, pokerstars to ftp, and vice versa) .

CC sends money to Walter. Because he trusts me, the impostor.
Walter receives the money (he's expecting it), and then Walter sends the money to account DD, believing that that is the proper account for me, AA, his buddy.

I transfer that money out of DD, to my 'other' account. And I am gone, forever. So is the money, gone forever.

CC is now pissed at Walter.
Walter is now pissed at AA.
AA is indignant, as he has never heard of this trade.

But I, and that money, are gone forever. Because I was an impostor.
The DD account is empty: that money went somewhere else.

Why did you ever use AIM, ICQ, MSM, or those message services?
Why did you not insist that everything be done out in the open? Here, in the public forum?

So here's the solution: do NOTHING. Don't even send it back, for the moment. But when you do decide to send it, you will ONLY SEND IT TO THE VERY ACCOUNT WHO SENT IT TO YOU. On the same site.

Got all that? I will take questions. I agree it's a little hard to follow, if you're essentially honest.
