So in the last month or so I have noticed that on my grind days I have been using between 3-5GB of data per day (8-14hour days) with little to no other net browsing or downloads or anything else. This is far more than anything previously

Has anyone else noticed an increased use of internet recently? Poker sites are constantly updating their software and I am wondering if updated versions of some sites are using more data now

Anyone with any knowledge about this would be great.

Fwiw I play on stars, ipoker, 888 and ongame

1 gigabyte of text is 700,000 pages. That's a lot of HHs.

I would be interested to hear what the standard data use per hour is on all the major sites though

My understanding is that the connection to the server of the site uses up X amount of internet data under the cap with an ISP. In light of this im not sure how I understand this

Get a program like BitMeter which tells you the rate at which you are downloading and uploading. Use it with no poker sites open and see what the reading is. Then open the poker sites and see if it spikes.

3-5GB a day sounds very high. 3GB a day would be ~10 42minute tv shows in pretty good quality.

You could have a virus that is pinging the world from your machine.

Full Tilt still lists 56k dial up as the minimum required connection speed:

I used to 4-table Stars on 56k no problems

The article linked in the OP talks about a 250gb download limit. Assuming that they consider 1gb equal to 1000mb (as ISPs do here in Australia), you will get about 4,266,666 minutes of one-tabling download per month. Given that there are only 43,200 minutes in a month, you would have to be (approximately) 100-tabling continually, 24/7, for 30 days a month to hit the download limit from playing at PokerStars.

If you manage to do this, I'm sure that you'll rack up enough FPPs to concierge an additional internet connection.

Nice find - I was sure Josem had posted figures before, but didn't come across them.

So with those figures, 24-tabling for 10 hours would be less than 250 mb/day. That was 5 years ago, but I can't see any reason that the amount of data would have increased anywhere remotely in the neighbourhood of 10 to 20-fold.

Perhaps Josem will pop in with updated figures at some point.

Hi,

I've consulted with the leader of our Network Operations team. He has confirmed that the PokerStars client still uses a similar amount of data.

Conceptually, if you are playing Zoom poker, you might see slightly more data use (since you are playing more hands) but it should all remain in the same order of magnitude. Similarly, if you keep Multi-Table Tournament lobbies visible and updating on your screen, you might see a further small increase, but certainly not in the order of gigabytes per day.

It is very unlikely that your PokerStars client would be using 3gb of data a day: it is probably something/someone else using that amount of data. That said, if, for some reason, you think that this is the case in your situation, please email support@pokerstars.com so that my colleagues in the Technical Support Team can work through your unique and individual case.

Sincerely,

Michael J

P.S. I'm glad knircky likes my sense of humour. I knew I would find someone, somewhere, who did. It only took me 32 years.

Sounds like it could be the 888 video streaming.
or a simple 0 miscalculation.

I doubt anything related with Poker is using 3-5gb a day. Unless your streaming Pokerstars.tv and watch a whole bunch of poker videos.
