Hi,
I have been playing poker s & g's now for just over a year and have managed to profit playing low limits (just over $1000 from about 1000 s & g's at $5). i have recently started playing $20 sit and gos with a successful return but am now unsure if i am ready to step up to a level where i could potentially make some serious money.
anyone got any advice on how they have made this step or how to easy it is to go from making consistent low profits to consistent high profits?
Practice practice and practice. Of course you need to study and talk about hands but in the long run practice is the most important factor. Also, as previous poster mentioned, post hands and talk about hands. Whenever you feel unsure whether you played a hand good or not post it in the pokerhand section of this forum and ask players and listen to their advice.
Another thing, good players generally don't tilt or stop playing when they feel they are tilting. Remember that. If you feel that you, for some reason, don't play at your best, take a break for a few hours or whatever time it takes to get back focus.
Well now im over losing 300 euro for the day by complete suckouts...My best advice is to try and polarise ranges on flop i found playing low level omaha helped no end for this and board reading skills...then learn how far ahead or behind u are or think you are this soon becomes second nature...you can get so good poeple think u are pottripper.

learn to play cash games, seriously, you'll probably lose for a while but dont worry about it you'll get better and actually learn to play the game and not just shove shove shove in sngs
you were just DYING to tell a bad beat story I guess?
OP: The first response nailed it. books are good for beginners, and occasionally have a nugget that will trigger an aha moment, but in general heavy doses of study are the best way to improve. Also I don't know how many 'great' players are going to respond to this (and I'm certainly not one of them), but if you can find a great player to hang out with it will help. All of the top players talk about the network of friends that helped improve their game.
You wont know if you got it or not until 2-5 years of consistent play. it took me 3 years to finally figure out alot of the game of PLO. I know i got much more to learn but i think i have all the basics down and some of the essentials.
seems like all the great players have a core of really good players around them. I dont have this so ill never be great
This applies to sports as well but you cant forget talent. Being aware of the dynamics between you and the other players is important. The great players play the player as well as the cards. Since you are more likely to see the same regs every day figuring out how to play each one is important. I guess always striving to make the most +EV play will make you better but also knowing when the situation or game is -EV will make you a lot of money.
