Really depends on what you are looking for. First of all, it's tough to get a bad Canon camera. Secondly, it's one of the smallest and lightest cameras ever available, which is it's biggest appeal.
Granted, 3.0x Optical Zoom is basically nothing nowadays, for typical usage this is fine. If you're looking to shoot scenery and landscapes, it's probably not. I do own a Canon Digital Rebel (from onecall.com), but I really enjoy the ease, clarity, and compactness of the SD1000. FWIW, my main compact camera is a Casio Exilim model with about 7x optical zoom.
