Occasionally the processors FTP uses get shut down. That's really the only 'reason' for the check problems as far as we ever know on our end.
You can always email FTP about your check, but if it's from late Sept it's probably fine. Generally the best use of this thread is to keep tabs on the range of dates that bad checks come out so you know if you should be worried or not.
And no, FTP won't email you about your check being bad until after you've cashed it most likely. If you ever have one coming and it was requested during a range people are posting that they've had them bounce from, you can email tilt for confirmation before cashing it. (assuming you catch it in time. If not, they'll compensate you for the bounced check fees if you ask. They used to just give you $100 no questions asked, but I guess that got too expensive for them...)
