At the local pub they have a poker club as well as some poker tournaments to raise money for a local charity. In Lachute - friday nights a tournament. On the West Island - $1000 prizes. At another charity tournament in Montreal, you can also win a seat or a chance at several seats for the WSOP main tournament in Vegas, and most of these are English.

You also have the Montreal Casino that has sit&go, poker tournaments, etc. for various stakes. If you want a full detail of what they offer, let me know, and I will find out for you. I have not played there as yet.

I have been trying to PM you with information, but as a newbie to the formums, it seems it will take a while to gain this privilege.

As of July 1st, my Daughter will be moving out of her present house and it will be empty, and she would like to rent it out while fixing it up so she can sell it at a later date.

Last year, her husband, my son-in-law, worked on the house and had it raised, putting in a basement - 9feet down to bedrock. This resulted is cracks throughout some of the walls in the house. He finished most of the outside, cementing around outside, connected all the plumbing, furnace, electricity, etc., but the value of the house with the cracks only covers the cost of what was put into the house. My daughter wants to help you out and help herself out at the same time. She is moving in with her new boyfriend, so the could leave a lot of the furnature, and rent the house furnished. $1600 per month would not be too expensive, if there were several people, at least three, to set up a grinding house.

I honestly believe, with Poker Stars paying US players back the money in their accounts, Full tilt poker will be doing the same, within the near future.

But - Big But - I don't believe US players will be able to play internet poker within the near future - so this would be an opportunity for at least three players to play here for 6 months (or more if you get a student visa).

There is a loft on the 2nd floor which 2 people could use, with another bedroom - dinning room - living room - kitchen and bathroom downstairs. And a 9 foot basement which could be set up to have other people there, or as the grinding room lol.

before this cuts off I will post it

July 1st would be during the Jazz Fest, and at my daughter's house you are 10 minute walk to the train station arriving downtown Montreal in 20 minutes, with another 15 minute walk to the different stages for the outside shows. Locally, 10 minute walk to several grocery stores. 15 minute walk to our local Irish Pub. 5 minutes walk to the Bank of Montreal, where you could get an account and credit card.

I am sure that once the US players are paid by Full tilt, not everyone will require a utility bill, as I am not sure every player could get one in their individuals name, but I am sure a bank account, credit card, lease if you want, house phone, cell phone, different internet accounts, cable account, etc. would be more than enough to prove you are living and playing outside the USA.

Also, while you Benjamin, and your pals, are waiting for the various sites to accept your new location, you could still grind away on all my accounts, earning lots of money coaching me and other local players lol.

I would have preferred to give out all this information in a personal message and not to the whole site, but if you want, maybe we can figure out a way to get you the address of the house so you could find it and actually see it on google maps.

I hope you will see this and get back to me, or if Do the math could PM you to let you know the information you wanted is here and be able to get back to me somehow.

Thank you in advance Do the math. (I probably passed you by in Eastern Ontario on the 401 heading and returning from Toronto this last weekend lol)

And stars accepted it.

Just curious, how is everyone scanning documents up there? I heard one guy snapped a photo of a utility bill. But what is everyone else doing, going to Kinkos?

I don't plan on taking a scanner with me.

Slow boat to china ftw.

But seriously, why fly when you can have a min-vacation via boat?

I purchased a Lexmark printer (not top of the line, but I don't do a lot of printing), for about $40. It comes with scanner. No reason not to have one.

If I buy a new vehicle before I go to Canada, do I just need the registration to get through the border, or is there something else?

Proof in insurance.
There's a yellow insurance card you should be able to get from your ins company that's used specifically for Canada. Not sure if they'll let you in with just regular proof of ins card, but I'd get the yellow one to be safe.

A little late to this discussion but its not that difficult to establish an account overseas. Especially since the EU. I have an active account with Credit Agricole that I established a couple of years ago and I'm a US citizen living in California. PM me if you would like some help.

Good info.

I just called my insurance company, and they are going to mail me the yellow card.

Thanks.

If I do ex pat in a year or two, I'd be going somewhere cheapo. Occasionally reading the BC transition site, lots of good info. Methinks you should re scan this thread and others in this and/or related forums - do some pming with those obviously headed to BC.

My girlfriend and I are strongly considering moving to Vancouver for 6(?) months and then seeing how it goes from there, possibly moving to a warmer spot when winter comes along. Big thanks for all the great info posted in this thread so far, very very helpful for the decision making process.

I've gone back about 5 pages in this thread looking for info that might help me, but haven't found any.

I live in a bordertown and have spent about half my time in Canada for the last 5 years, renting a room in a friends house, but without any written agreement. I asked him last week, and he agreed to give me a 6 month lease (utilities included).

So, I have a written lease, and a Canadian checking account. Does anyone know from experience whether this will suffice along with my US passport to get accounts at Canadian facing sites, and just as importantly Canadian facing e-wallets?

Get him to put one of the utilities in your name.

I'm finding conflicting stuff on the internet regarding Canadian visa requirements for US citizens. I don't need a visa to visit, as a US citizen. Should I just drive up and expect to get a 6 month passport stamp at the border, which I can then apply online to extend? That's my best guess from looking at like 3 different immigration sites.

Valid questions, you can just call them and get direct answers during business hours.

You're basically on an implied tourist visa. The border patrol has to approve that visa though. Based on some of what I've read (a decent chunk)--you will most definitely fail to get an extension unless you have a really good reason such as getting married, etc. Or if you apply for school and a school visa and so on.

Hearsay says that your 6 month visa is a rolling 180 in 365 day period. So you could theoretically visit 15 days a month and return home the other x days, and be able to go back and forth indefinitely. But the border patrol will eventually deny you I'm sure.

I'm a US citizen living in a Bordertown in Wa St., and I've crossed the border at leat 100 times in the last 5 years. Answering your question is not as simple as a yes or no.

You will be asked some questions by the agent at the booth. Depending on your answers, you will be waved through and be on your way (they have never stamped my passport), or you will be sent into customs and immigration for further questioning.

Most common questions:
Where do you live.
What is the purpose of your vist to Canada.
Are you bringing anything into CA to be left behind.
When do you plan to return to the US
Do you have any firearms or weapons aboard.
Have you ever been arrested.
Do you plan to work while you are in CA.
How much money do you have with you.

Best plan is to say you are visiting for 4-5 days, beacuse you want to see their great country. Be sure to have a hotel reservation, and have a printout of it fo refer to.

Do not have 6 months worth of stuff in your vehicle - that would be inconsistent with what you just told the agent, and they are not stupid. Don't raise a red flag!

Take your laptop, and clothes for 5 days, Canadian cash is not necessary, as using your debit card at any ATM will get you what you need.

Do NOT tell them you are moving there to play poker - you will be sent inside and likely back home unless you are very lucky.

Once you are past that agent you are in for as long as you want.

Buy what you need once you are in, be prepared for a call from your cc's bank to confirm that you are where you are and making purchses/atm wd there.

Be prepared to pay 1.5 times for food after tax.

Western CA especially near the coast is one of the best places in the world to live though expensive...Relax, don't speed , don't drink and drive, and use common sense.

That sounds kind of crazy, man. I'm not doing anything illegal and I'd rather not lie. I don't want to overstay my visa and I'm not moving there to take any jobs away from Canadians, and I've read other accounts of people on 2+2 saying they told the border dudes and border ladies that they are visiting to play poker online, which is what I'm doing. I have a house in the USA, I'm just trying to be abroad and wait out the legislative storm in the US. I'm planning to live in Canada for 6-12 months and then travel the world a bit.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but having now gone through the process of changing my address to a foreign one, FT and PS are not handling the situation identically.

Somewhat to the surprise of many, the easier site the get things sorted with is actually Full Tilt.

With Full Tilt, I sent a government issued photo ID and a utility bill via e-mail, and 2-3 days later, the switched me over.

I tried the same for Pokerstars, and they said they needed those things, but also a bank statement showing name, current address, and bank account type, and a land line (they specified no cell phone) to call me at the confirm.

I won't go into the gory details since I don't think anyone here is relocating to South Korea, but those things aren't exactly easily obtained here. This has amounted to me playing with ease on FT, and I'm still in the middle of a paperwork fiasco with stars.
