Rabbit hunting : how are things done in your room? Rabbit hunting : how are things done in your room?

Hi there,

was wondering if any serious rooms allowed rabbit hunting, and in what conditions.

Player are charged a fixed amount for the privilege?
Players have to tip x?
Tolerated, if everyone agrees to it?
Tolerated in huge pots only?
0 tolerance?

I'm not a huge fan of slowing games down, and the concept of rabbit hunting, but was wondering what it was like elsewhere...

Cheers!

I play primarily in Maryland and I've never seen it done here at MGMNH, MDL, or HB. So I guess "zero tolerance" would be my answer.

As for whether it should be allowed, of course it shouldn't be allowed. But I wouldn't object if someone were to toss the dealer an extra tip for doing it once in a blue moon.

How is it handled in your area (and where do you play)?

technically not allowed
some dealers won't do it at all
some will blatantly do it
some will subtly do it
some will drop the deck so the player requesting it can do it

Never have seen it at a casino table even once. I would not doubt that it might happen once in a while at a table full of regs where there are "personal relationships" between dealers and players. This is mostly a home game or small underground room thing in my opinion.

I have seen it happen occasionally, usually subtly. As long as it's infrequent, I don't really care that much. But the general rule at most places is that it's not permitted.

There are only two rooms where I've seen that recently. Horseshoe Tunica and the "fun" poker room on the Strip in LV. Pretty sure it's against the "official" house rules in both places.

In Tunica I think it's because they lost most of their tourists over the last couple of years and do whatever is needed to keep the local regs happy. In LV it's probably because they want to embrace their image of not being too serious.

Personally, I think it's one of those "no harm, no foul" things. If a big pot takes a couple of minutes anyway, I don't think 10 extra seconds hurt anybody too bad and it's often exciting for casual players even if they were not in the hand.

Playing plo where usually the dealers ignore the request but occasionally they will flash it to 1 player who then will announce it (or not) to the table.

Only time I've ever seen it was final table of a tournament 3 handed and we all agreed... not seen it done any other time.

I see it happen 2 or 3 times per year in Edmonton. Most dealers won't do it, some might do it for a reg. I think they aren't supposed to, but I've never heard it ruled on.

The thing is rabbit hunting isn't against the rules simply because of the time it takes. It's against the rules because it may reveal information about players hands.

Maybe, but I simply don't care and doubt most other players do?

If a big donor shows up at the game and says he's only going to play if the winner of every hand has to show his cards, I am OK with that too. OTOH, I am not interested anyway to sit in a game where other players having information about my hand has a bigger effect than me having information about their hand.

My room sometimes plays like more of a home game, I'm posting this because I'm trying to standardize our procedures.

We used to have a promo where a straight flush would get a champagne bottle opened, and we would allow rabbit hunting if everyone folded on the flop for example to see if the player would hit it and get the bottle.

Now it's gotten a bit out of control though, as 1 of the main players has decided he wants to rabbit hunt a good 50% of the pots where he's heads up against someone (betting 10 bucks on the side). Now people think they are entitled to rabbit hunting and because noone really complains that strongly a lot of is going on in really ridiculous situations (tiny pots), slowing down the game a lot (players convincing each other to side bet...).

So I'm leaning towards banning it completely and figuring out some other fun promo to make players happy.

We don't allow it at all. In fact one of our dealers got at least a verbal warning earlier this year when he showed the flop to the player right across from him in a tournament.

It is bad for the game. There is a reason that 99.9% of all casinos don't allow it.

It's not allowed and the majority of dealers won't do it. But if we occasionally sneakily do it ourselves while the deck is down and the dealer is pushing a pot, the dealer might just give us a "reminder" about it, or might not say anything. It's usually easier for seat 9 to get away with it more than occasionally.

Where did any player ever get the idea that its ok to reach and touch the deck. I think dealers should be allowed to stab your hand if you do this.

Maybe they should be. I personally don't rabbit hunt because I don't see the point in it. I make my action decisions for a reason.

It would so rarely reveal actionable information that I doubt many people would care.

(Guy folds on river, I start pushing the pot.)

FOLDER: Hey, can we see the river?

YTF: Sure! Put your call in there, and I'll show you!

(they stop asking after that.)

It doesn't happen in my casino.

When I play at a home game and I'm dealing, I refuse to rabbit hunt. Hand's done...next!

Mostly this - FME

If that PITA table-captain in seat 9 wants to do it once in a while (e.g., once a night)... I don't care....
