You can't make deals in tournaments so does this count as a deal?

Table talk. Warning at best.

I thought tournaments were the only places deals were made.

I think you can say it, it wouldn't be binding

It's never binding.

I don't know if it is usually allowed or not, but it is nothing like this.

Good question. I've never thought anything of it, but I'll ask the tournament director tomorrow if it's allowed.

Generally speaking tournaments are getting less tolerant of table talk in general.

I was asking why, you say, no deals in a tournament.

Most tournaments I've played or dealt have ended in a deal being made.

What he means is that you can't make any deals in hands (chopping, running it twice, giving money back, etc.) since the size of each players stack impacts the $EV of every other player. In cash, you have more freedom to make deals in hands.

Of course you can make deals at the end of the tournament, but every player affected has to agree. I suppose you could make a deal in a hand if you could get every player to agree, but that just really never happens.

Never binding either.

Personally I don't like it. It feels to me that the fact that all players in the tournament are affected by the result of a hand a player should not be allowed to make a deal to get something in return for an action.

However it is one of those things where I generally do not see it being prohibited. Agreed if they say it it is not enforceable, I would prefer that it not happen ... but its pretty minor so it doesn;t strike me as worth getting too upset about.

I asked my TD today if this was allowed.... he said no. He said "falls under the 'discussing your hand' rule".

Can't say this in a tournament or cash game either.

I would say about 80% of tourneys, no issue, the other 20% they will say it falls under the "no statements that may affect action" rule.

Most rooms won't enforce it if the rake is maxed out. The house is getting their full cut, the dealer is getting tipped, both players are happy, and the rest of the players get to the next hand sooner.

A. Not binding.

B. Nothing like this. Your call and check is collusive and should never be allowed in a tournament.

Assuming this is America, the First Amendment allows you to say whatever you want.

This good point except that almost every part of this statement is incorrect.

You need to return to high school to retake that US Govt class again. Hopefully you will pass this time.

Some rooms allow it some don't.

Some Dealers allow it, some don't. In both of those kinds of rooms...

Personally I don't care.

When I am asked this question I usually say "I don't answer that question in the middle of a hand" or "once you fold I'll let you know". Unless I know why the other player is asking and I think I can misdirect him with a false tell.

I don't ask it anymore because I don't like the angleshooting deceptive implications. If I get the answer I am looking for then I would call when the other guy thinks I have made a deal to fold. I'd rather not make enemies.

Ironically, I have had players say to me as I am thinking about what to do, "I'll show if you fold". Almost always they have a monster. At least the first two times I called they did. The last few times I can't say because I folded.

I just say "please don't talk about the hand" in a tournament. It generally stops there.
