Throw the dealer a white chip and ask that he or she *not* wash the cards. Make sure the person asking they be washed sees everything.

So, chase the donator away?

In my experience the person asking for cards to be scrambled all the time is an uber-nit,

In this particular case he was a nit, a regular and a donator so you are both right.

Maybe it's a reverse inverse triple range merge angle. Never really considered someone asking to wash cards was doing it on purpose to give off that fish scent. Hmmm

Sure, because there's no way they could use the shuffle machine to rig a blackjack game.

Sure, that's what they want you to think.

Seriously, what would the motivation be for the casino to rig the deal in a poker game?

In all seriousness I had nearly the exact same exchange at a table once, guy called it "the computer hand" I asked what he was talking about and said something to the effect of- The computer hand is Q7, the punched all the numbers into a computer and ran it, Q7 won the most, computers proved it.
Dealer agreed, either to be nice or to most the discussion along. 1/2 game, still better than listen to the players in higher stakes whine about every little thing they can find.
My recollection is that Q7o was calculated by somebody to be the median holdem hand.

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

Rofl yeah.. more often than not the person asking for the cards to be washed is some old head who is frustrated he hasn't picked up Aces recently and hasn't been flopping quads.

Played with a guy who seriously would only look at one card when he was in the small blind. He was 100% confident telling the table that he only needed to see one card to make his decision (I guess fold or limp lol?).

Guy dropped some other knowledge bombs like, "If you play a suited hand you should always play the same hand non-suited." He also folded QJ suited face up to a single raise with like 8bbs claiming he was looking for a better spot. Ends up doubling up with AA then busting QQ vs KK within the next 15 mins.

Probably more that just giving into a harmless minor superstition that your rational mind knows is hogwash can take way less mental energy than refusing to indulge the part of your brain that is wired to think that way. The brain loves to spot and then find significance in patterns, many of which are nonsense.

It can be +ev to just wear the lucky hat or ask for a wash here or there just to quell random thoughts from the part of the brain that thinks it actually matters.

Saw a guy at the casino get two outer'd which prompted him to threaten to press his body up close against the other player (a female) and wet his pants to get urine on her. It didn't stem from any previous banter. The crickets were deafening.

To make bigger pots to ensure max rake on every hand. Obviously.

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

I tried to help a friend/acquaintance once and told him he needed to attack pots more in position and be more agressive.

Wherein he responds.. "I like to be agressive by letting the other players bet and provide the aggression"

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

I had to ask the guy to my right if I just had a stroke.

1/2

Limped around to the hero in late position. He popped it to 12. 4 callers. Flop KQJdd. 60 in the pot. V1 bets 20, V2 calls, V3 shoves for his last $50, H re-shoves for 200, V4 tanks then calls (still has 100 left), V1 tanks and shoves (covers V4) who calls.

I was both amazed and happy to have folded preflop.

Turn and river both blank and heroes set of jacks wins the main pot. V1 announced I knew I was behind the main but I was ahead of V4 as he flips up K8hh. Turns out V4 was on the flus draw.......

So here is the truly absurd part..... He put in 300 bucks to win 100 for the net loss of 100......

He spent the next 5 minutes patting his self on the back as the table refilled with new players.

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

Guy raises early position, guy in c/o 3bets fairly large, folds around and initial raiser folds fairly quickly. C/o shows AA and says "tried to polarise it, was hoping he had KK".

Last night at a 2/5 game. HJ raises to 15. Button reraises to 40. Hijack 4 bets to 65. Button folds while saying "I needed to know if you had a good hand or not"

Re: Most absurd poker "thinking" you have heard in a live game?

Playing a hand the other night. 1/2nl...i was utg with 67hh made it 17, V from middle position makes it 40.. fold to me, I call. Flop is T,T,9..i check, V bets 40, I raise to 100(figured he had overs and would fold) ..V tanks and goes AI for another 50 on top. I reluctantly called based on pot size and believing I was still live.. turn and river are both a 6..V shows AKo and flips out when I show 67.. his exact response was

"67!? How do you have 67!? I thought for sure you had pocket jacks. "

Found it funny he thought I would/could fold the 50 more.. not to mention simply not folding to my post flop raise since he was so sure what I had

Gotta feel his pain but I dunno about the fold lol. Certainly put's you in an odd tilt though having been there.

About 3 months ago in two back to back sessions totaling about 8 hours of play I had...

AA, ran in to KK and lost.
KK, cracked
KK, in to AA and lost
AA, ran in to QQ and lost.

They still like to remind me about it even now when I show AA or KK.

The chances of AA v KK are something like once every 41 hands if you are dealt aces and AA v KK on average once every 8,820 hands. (6 max, taken from another thread on here). That's just the odds of running in to them let alone losing. I just couldn't believe it much to the amusement of the dealers and other players.

When you are running so bad with such high odds you do sit there wondering what on earth you can do. Obviously it's to keep playing as normal and put it down to some absurd luck but still it stings like intercourse and messes with your head until you can take a break and get back on it.
