Hi there 2p2 I've found a local poker room in my area that does tournaments only 5 days a week which is my preferred game. The rake I feel is huge and I'm wondering for a good player can money be made with the rake? I'll list the events and gtd prizepool.

Monday mega Monday 12k prizepool, 165/35$
Wednesday 1k guaranteed 1st 55/20$
Thursday satellite 150/30$
Friday omaha/Holdem switch 120/30$
Sunday 120/30$
Bounty 100/25$.

Thanks guys.

Short answer, yes.

Long-ish answer, it depends how big is your edge on the field. Judging from the fact that it's a local poker room with really high rake, the games are probably soft as baby balls. Definitely can be beatable.

Real answer, with these low buy-ins and high rake even if you were a super wizard crusher I doubt you could make $10/h on avgerage.

Hi thanks for the reply, so your reply means this rake is really ridiculous and hard to make much money?

What are the structures? Your skill advantage diminishes as the speed of the tournament increases. If you've only got two hours before everyone is under 30BB, it's highly unlikely you can overcome the variance.

Rake is pretty normal, havent seen many tournaments under 400$ buyin that charge less then 18-20%, even Venetian Aria etc charge those rakes at their dailys/extravaganza...
Only at high buy-in tournaments with 1000$+ buy-in you can find rake of 10%

30k stack doesn't have any meaning without knowing the blind levels...

It's a turbo structure. Starting stacks are pretty much irrelevant with 20 minute blinds. It's going to turn into a < 10BB shove fest at some point, probably near the final table and (well) short of the money. You would have to be a HIGHLY skilled player to overcome that kind of rake.

think of it like this. if you played every day with no rake in the tournament would you pay 8,000 a year to the house to do that.?

or if instead of a rake like that they just took one whole tournament for themselves randomly each fifth time played.

I think what your getting at is that its really high. There's a monthly points race where 1st gets 1k. I love tournament poker and prefer it to cash but I guess I'm going to have to be really good to make it at these.

What do you mean by "make it"? Are you planning to go pro and support yourself by playing these tournaments? That would be almost impossible. If you just enjoy playing tournaments more than cash, then by all means play and have fun, but don't expect your winnings to fund any vacations or anything.

For me make it means making money at these games and building a bigger bankroll to play bigger events. I have a good paying job where I can play these comfortably and not worry about if I lose my roll.

I've been on quite a few tournament-funded vacations from small buy-in events.

I don't think some people realize how bad the fields are in these types of events. This is mostly what I play in and have never had a long downswing. Do I win life-changing money? No. Can I buy lots of nice things with what I do win? Yes.
