HA! If only I were qualified to critique dealer's form.

We opted out of Weekend $25 Pai Gow. Despite my anyone-can-do-it ability to memorize only a few rules and play "perfect" Pai Gow, neither of us felt like playing for $25 a shot. I sat Omaha and finished another one of Al's beers, and Al played a bit more hold'em.

Just a general question..
Does dealing cards for a living kill the drive to play cards...?
I mean when you get a dealer game going..do you take turns or draw straws to see who deals..?
I just think it would be like working at Hersheys...eventually you would hate the smell of chocolate..

Usually the complete opposite. Though want to avoid blanket statements, I would usually say if you have certain negative proclivities, being in an environment that feeds those negatives will just reinforce them.

also, and i am fresh from coming from my local (3.5 hr drive) casino. I totally understand that most of dealers' income comes from tips but from a customer perspective, I am going to lose all of that back to the dealer/the house. The dealer and the house are interchangable for the most part when i am down $500. Therefore, since I am going to end up losing my money to the dealer anyway, i feel it is ok to tip them a small amount. it is just giving them back the money early right?

In my case yes. I find playing cards extremely boring now unless it's with good friends.

There is literally thread upon thread here where people debate ad nauseum about what to tip dealers. This is not the thread for that. We are all very tired of that conversation. I'm not trying to be rude, but let's please keep tipping theory discussions out of this thread.

Baptism by fire tonight. I'm on overtime. It's like midnight, I get pushed out of the end of a string and get the signal to go home. Thank god!

BOOM! Jackpot hits for the 7th time in 3 days. What. The. FIZZLE?! I'm a literally walking out of the room when I hear my supervisor yell "Quadstriker!"

Oh ****.

"I need you to work the board while we get this jackpot paid out."

Double ****.

I have never worked the board for anything more than a few minutes while the cardroom wasn't busy. This is a hopping Saturday night and we're packed with even more people streaming in. AHHHHHHHHHH!!!

I survived. Every poker player ever thinks running the board is easy, and that whoever is doing it is doing it wrong.

It's not easy.

Being too green to have any cool stories, I want to make an observation that I have found to be true that others can confirm or refute:

The guy who, when I get into the box, says he is a dealer, will:

A) Tip really well if pushed a big pot
and
B) Will never win a big pot

Discuss...

Y'know, playing poker in a casino makes me want to deal more. It's more fun in the box.

At home games, I don't like dealing. If I'm doing it all myself, then I'm having to do all that stuff that we do, and I can't just immerse myself with my peers. If it's a rotation deal, I'm distracted watching all the crappy dealers. Sadly I'm not at stakes that can support a full-time dealer at a home game.

Tho' I have played a few times in home games with a lot of other pro dealers, and I rather enjoy dealing to them, because I know they're going to do all the little things as players that help move the game along, and they'll appreciate the job I'm doing.

Is that due to dealing, or due to realizing that poker played seriously is rather boring in the first place?

Re: The Breakroom: low-content gaming employee chatter thread

I used to do the board a lot when I was still a chip runner. Most thankless job in the room.

I remember a Saturday years ago when we had well over 200 names on the board (only had 27 tables then) and the computer locked up. Couldn't add or delete names from the list. Every player was in my face about where they were on the list, "hey that table has a seat, why aren't you calling names!" etc. What a nightmare.

I wonder how they spread poker before computers?

BTW, I love this thread.

I was locked into the stud game from hell tonight. I knew that when I got pushed, I'd be able to go home, but the push wasn't coming until a tourney table broke, and it seemed to take forever while I was surrounded by the most awful bickering I've ever encountered at a table. Every hand got to fifth street before the "you sucked out!" accusations (followed by the "I started with Aces!" defenses) from the PRIOR HAND subsided.

Finally, I saw a dealer coming from the tourney area. I knew he was hear to push, and I was 99% sure I was going home (I was 100% sure I was being rescued from this table).

That approaching dealer looked like the giant container ship that found Tom Hanks in Castaway. I knew my rescue had finally, FINALLY arrived.

I think it's a mixture of both. Before I started dealing, I was one of those 21 year old kids multitabling and bonus whoring on multiple poker sites to pay the bills (Note to the world: Being an actor is a laughable way to try to make a living). I remember logging on to Party poker and becoming physically ill thinking about the hours of grinding in front of me that day. That was when I knew it was time for a change.

Nice analogy! I'm sure we've all had our "I'm saved! I'm SAAAVED!" moments.
