how do you not turn a profit playing live?

i've only had one losing session in the past month live and that was like 100 dollars...

i just wrapped my record yesterday for the number of winning sessions in a row in live cash poker at 15. [this is since i started keeping detailed records about 1.5 years ago]. this includes NLH (2/5 - 5/10), PLO, O8, and omaha high (limit).

and actually, i would have posted a win 16 sessions ago, but a dealer mistake (burned and turned before action was complete) cost me a 360bb pot. that would have put the streak at 18.

though i am a subscriber to the "one the long session" philosophy, live players keep records on a per session basis so that is how the data presents itself.

i had a horrible month in february, but turned it around almost exactly on march 1 and had been running hot since then.

what is your best winning streak in live poker?
do you find that winning begets more winning?
and conversely that losing begets losing?
what influences / practices / references do you have to promote a winning psychological state?

Best winning streak was 8 in a row immediately followed by my worst losing streak of 5 in a row.

Live poker is EZ
so you went 9 time and won 8, Believe it or not you never answered the question. did you win 5 lose 1 then 4 more wins? or was it 8 wins then a you lost 1.

Answering the question should have been EZ'er then that.

As for me, I am giving an est. I would say 18, I went 4 or 5 times a week and the last day of the month was my only losing session.

Also, once you start measuring something, you start affecting the outcome. Subconsciously, when you are up slightly, you may be changing your betting patterns in order to reduce variance so you can have a "winning session" and this may cause you to miss out on a lot of +EV long shots. Or if you are losing, this can facilitate tilting because you know you have a limited amount of time to make up the lost ground. Or even worse, you may play when you are so tired or tilted that you are seriously impaired.

This is what I measure:

1) % of times I have winning sessions (varies from 60% to 70% yearly)
2) Average win in a winning session
3) Average loss in a losing session (which is about 50% of my average winning session)
4) BB/hr each year weighted for the different games I play

When I looked at my records I found I had 5 winning session in a row a few times. Because I had no interest in my "streak" I believe that this is the natural outcome of winning about 2/3 of my sessions (1 in 15 times I play 5 sessions this should happen).

I had one streak of 4 losing sessions in a row. By the 4th one I knew I was playing like sh*t because I was losing more than I usually did in my losing sessions and statistically I knew the likelihood of that happening was so low (1 in 241 times I play 4 sessions). By evaluating my play carefully, I saw how much I could save by going back to basic starting hand requirements, etc. and got myself righted.

But until I saw this thread I couldn't have told you what my longest winning or losing streaks were. And thats going to be true for me going forward as well.
I don't think the OP was looking for a barometer of his play. A large number of winning sessions in a row and one begins to wonder something like: "Man, my records show this is my 10th winning session in a row. Is this a normal streak for a competent player? I wonder what would be considered an unbelieveable streak for a skilled player at my limit, etc."

Then, to ease his mind he thinks, "Hey! I can just post it on 2+2 and see what others have experienced in realtion to streaks."

I have never had a losing session.

I define a session as: From starting point A played until I am up $, end session (point B).

Rinse and repeat.

12ish at 2-5 NLH

Another and more interesting fact is...

Ive gone 13/13 in trips to Vegas in just poker....never had a losing trip, and only once didnt make enought o cover room/flight.

Now if only the Spearmin Rhino didnt exist....

As far as "how can you lose in Live play"...I used to think like this...then I had a horrible run at 2-5 last yr where I dropped like 7 buyins bang bang bang...without really doing anything wrong.

You can lose live.

I recently lost in the 15/30 LHE/O8 mix I play occasionally -- it's a private game that only runs once a week, and I had been away from it for a year in the middle -- but I checked by books and the loss ended a 23 session streak in that game over 2.5 years where each session is a 5 hour minimum.

Yes! I enjoy the content.

I have been on heaters of 15 plus sessions.

I wonder what emotions other people are going through sitting down to a cash game when they have won the last 14 sessions in a row?

I'm currently on a streak of 14 sessions without a loss at $6/$12 Omaha and $6/$12 Hold'em. One session was pretty much breakeven (+$2), but many session have been +$600 or more.

In a typical year I win about two-thirds of my sessions, lose about a quarter of them, and break even the rest (at these stakes, I consider anything within $60 of my buy-in a breakeven session). So statistically, it's unlikely that I would go this long without a losing session.

I'm sure a lot of it is just running good. But I also pick days and times when I know the games will be juicy (find a game you can beat and pound it—that's my philosophy). How do I feel? Relaxed and confident. A couple of weeks ago, I was down $360 within my first hour. I didn't do anything horrible; I just whiffed with all my premium starting hands, missed a few draws, and paid off with some second-best hands when the pots were large. But I stayed calm and patient, and when I left 5 hours later, I was up $360.

One of the regulars I play with claims he lost 29 sessions in a row last year. He's a good player, but he let the losing streak get the better of him. He'd be down $150 after a few hours (which happens all the time in loose games at these stakes), and he'd quit early, convinced he was doomed to lose yet again.

I don't recall having had a winning streak longer than the one I'm on. And I wouldn't be surprised if it ends tomorrow. But I'm certainly going to enjoy it while it lasts.

This is what I was looking for ^

I actually start feeling like wow, this has to end. But why cant you just keep on the right side of variance? Keep picking the right seats with the right number of people.

I have read that Doyle went on a heater for a year or so.
