When/why the deluge of wide size cards? When/why the deluge of wide size cards?

I haven't followed the poker scene in a while but back in my day (say 10 yrs ago) every casino, tournament, televised cash game etc. used the narrow/bridge size cards. I've noticed most of the recent clips I've seen have switched to using the wide size. Granted, that is the definition of "poker sized" cards and the game is "poker" but, when did this start becoming commonplace? And also, why? Card manufacturer decision, some high profile player(s) starting a trend somewhere along the line, etc?

Ironic how I threw away most of my wide cards to fit in with the crowd back then, and now that I want to take up poker again, I've got to start all over...

A lot of the shuffle machines only accept bridge sized cards.

Your last sentence confuses me. Actually, your whole post does. No one is using a certain size card because one size is more hip. You have to "start all over"??? lol

I don't quite follow...shuffle machines only accept bridge, how does that lead to the proliferation of wide?

True, I don't have to follow what everyone else is doing. But I felt embarrassed the last time I hosted a home game and only had the wide size cards. My OCD mind kept thinking "this is not how it's done on TV" and the thought wouldn't let go, so I switched permanently to bridge size. Long story short, most of my poker-playing friends have moved away and guess what I've been playing since then: bridge. So it wasn't a total waste.

No one is coming to your hosted game saying "Man, can you believe this clown doesn't use bridge sized cards???" to each other.

I don't believe that card rooms are switching to wider cards. Maybe others could chime in, but from what I see when I am out and about, they are all still using bridge size.

Everywhere I play is bridge sized.

OP is talking about steaming/televised tables. Those use RFID cards picked by whoever designed the table layout. That person decided wider cards look better or are easier to read on the screen. It might be the same person running many different tournaments.

It has little to no relation to what cards are used on non-streaming tables.

You can notice this if they ever show footage from a non-televised table at the main event. The cards are different than those on the televised table.

I have never seen "poker" size cards used in a public cardroom.

Is that in reply to Quad's post? or are you showing another example of bridge sized?

Sorry but DUH! Well covered and discussed that bridge size is by far the most common if not almost universal size used in casino poker. It is the only size I have seen or heard used with auto shufflers. Most who play where there are auto shufflers could post a similar picture.

The bigger cards may be used in stud games, where it's important to see your opponents' cards across the table.

My local cardroom uses both types (wide cards for stud, narrow for hold'em and omaha) and I have not noticed any changes made to the autoshufflers to accommodate.

There are two difference variables, the size of the cards themselves (bridge size is a bit thinner, poker a bit wider). And then the size of the spots on the cards (jumbo vs standard index)

Confusingly, casino poker uses bridge sized cards usually. In my experience they almost always use standard index, but I have seen jumbo in use occasionally. They would be better in a stud game perhaps, but in general a room would only have one type of deck in use to maximize substitutability IMO.

I made the switch to jumbos about 4 years ago. It helps a lot with the folks that don't see real well and not so many special seating requests. I also like being able to read the cards from further away from the table and when I have to go to surveillance to watch video.

Do you have to set the shufflemaster settings to whether they are standard or jumbo decks? I guess maybe only for the deckmate 2's, so that they can suit the decks properly?

Yes, deckmate 2's are calibrated for the type of deck in use. Not sure about older models.

I still use the older models and they don't read the cards, so no adjustment needed.

The European tournaments all seem to use wide cards. Maybe that’s what you’ve been seeing.
