I still say tribal poker will be back to normal first. Everyone may try to open short tables, but tribal will be the first to go full ring.

The tribes in northern Arizona and the Gallup New Mexico area are getting rocked by this virus. I have to wonder how much this will affect their decisions in these states.

I'd say there is a pretty close to zero percent chance that there will be full ring games before a vaccine is out.

4-handed player max poker tables was just regulated in Nevada.

So, Vegas rooms are dead until whenever we can safely go back to normal society. How can any casino operate a 4-handed room. Who would play?

Perhaps more importantly, will the poker rooms even come back at a later time?

I don't see why a poker room would even offer this. Why take any chances with a game that is far down the list of profitable games for the casino? Would these games even go everyday? How often would they have to stop play because of walkers/smokers etc. I'm sure the hardcore players would be down for it but the games would be tough. Would they raise the rake?

I think it's more likely there will be a second online poker boom before live poker is a thing again.

Four handed?

No.

Casino poker now enters "medically induced coma" status.

No one is going to a casino to play 4 handed. I feel badly for all the dealers who will run out of unemployment benefits down the road... Very sad.

100%. does not work when player given option of live vs elec. no way, no how.

if elec is only option, does pretty well for house and players.. see woodbine in Toronto... see Cruise ship, and to some degree see Excalibur.

I try to come up with ways to think outside of the box on a solution here and nothing really makes sense logistically. Two tables somehow sharing cards can’t come together in a way that’s not going to drastically slow the game down. RFID stuff would be dumb, too. Even the idea of a rise in popularity of Chinese poker doesn’t make sense. There’s just no point whatsoever in rooms opening at all. I think they all stay closed for the time being and just come back when the restrictions are loosened, even if it’s 12 months from now.

I agree! I keep trying to look at this every which way but I just can't see it. Even if it does come back it's probably gonna suck for a while.

I'm hoping maybe something I haven't thought about changes things for the good that proves me wrong.

I cant say I am an expert in all state and tribal regualations, but I cant rem seeing one that requires BBJ promo dollars to go back to poker players. it has to go back to casino customers.

lolz. ubless you are joking, paying rake is not gonna be your main problem moving forward if you play for a living. even 10% to $10 is zero rake if pots dont exist.

While I know this was a joke, in reality regulators are going to want to see rooms make sure people are distancing. I see more squaring up, not less.

I’ve been thinking about that 4max thing compared to our regular full ring tables and started to wonder, how many other popular games are out there where the majority of players actually prefer to be idle for most of the time?

If you just tell somebody he can choose between two games, one where he’s involved in most of the action and one where he’s idle 90% of the time, how many would actually choose the latter?

The “problem” with shorthanded poker for the players is obvious: The skill gap between good and bad players becomes way more significant and bad players don’t like that. Also, the casino doesn’t like that because players go broke way too fast. The rake is another significant issue.

To me, the by far easiest way to make 4max poker a more playable game for average full ring players, would be to include some kind of randomizer to negate skill differences. In other words, make it more of a game of chance again. Might not be a viable approach though because lots of the players who want to play full ring just don’t like change and lots of the winning shorthanded players don’t want to give up their edge.

But I think people who have played significant amounts of shorthanded poker online and into the night in casino/home games where the number of players eventually drops down to 3-5, know that the skill gap in those games is often so absurd that it wouldn’t be a viable option as an every day casino game.

Aren't there games like that already though? Like PLO or, a better example yet, 5-card PLO?

One of my resolutions for the year was to avoid shorthanded $1/$2 tables for various reasons like rake and playing style. So much for this. Poker will be the last thing to come back in the casinos.

Easy. Mark 4 “X” on the rail. Tell players to be square with that X at all times while seated or they will be removed.

OK just for fun (and because I am bored), I figured that if you keep the same proportions of current table (44 inches wide, 104 inches long), and figured on a 11 person table (10 players plus dealer), for 6 feet of space between each person's center of mass, you would need 66 linear feet of edge. This would result in a table that is 15.3 feet by 36 feet. The maximum distance between the dealer and the people at the 8 and 3 seats would be 19.7 feet. Current tables have about 15.7 linear feet of edge (which means each player gets about 17 inches of space)

what the what?

plexiglass station for each player needs an enclosed top, bottom, and little door on the back that I can can open and close to get in/out. plus smaller door I can open / close to get drinks, chips, etc. passed thru. and little rubber gloves I fit my hand into at the bottom opening for table for chips and cards..

Shuffle Up and Deal.

When it's on the 25th I need to remind myself of that on occasion, because I'm used to thinking of MDW as the last weekend of the month. But when it's on the 25th there's another May weekend after it (just not a long weekend).
