What's with people showing me their cards? What's with people showing me their cards?

What's with people showing me their cards? Is this common? It seems like almost half the time I'm playing live, one of the people sitting next to me purposely shows me their cards (provided I folded) so that I can sweat the hand.
It makes me feel kind of awkward, but at the same time, it's free information on how they play.

I do play pretty tight preflop and fold a lot (especially for PLO), so maybe they feel like I'm missing out or something, I dunno.

Some guy yesterday was showing me his flopped straight and then wouldn't shut up about how he got out drawn.

This happens alot, and I think you are handling it fine.

I don't ever reciprocate and it doesn't stop people from showing me often. If I had to guess, I think they are doing for 2 reasons. 1) To show me what crazy stuff they are playing or how they might get outdrawn. 2) They think others might be board so they get to "live" the hand a little.

The only "issue" is that the same player will say something like "What do you think?", or "Can you believe that?". Nothing nefarious, but I always just say "I don't like to comment on hands in play". I don't jump their **** or talk about rules of different places, just comment that I personally don't like to discuss.

People want to show you their cards....go ahead and let them.

I would never mind somebody showing me their cards for any reason I can think of. However I would also never feel like showing my own to him just to be friendly. If he asks, just be polite and refuse to play along with his attempts to see what you have.

Yeah, I obviously wouldn't comment on a live hand, but even after the hand I don't think it's right to comment other than saying, something like "that sucks" or "You got there".

I think part of my problem with it is the 'show one, show all' rule, so if anyone ever asked what the person had, I wouldn't hesitate in telling because it really is an unfair advantage to the people on the other side of the table.

*shrug*

I think it's more of a social thing for the people who do it, the ones who frequently flash me their cards also tend to be chatty at the table. They must like sweating the hand with their "buddy" who's next to them. I always just play along, nothing wrong with giving the fish the experience they are looking for.

There's no way I am taking the heat for that. Point out that the rule is "show one, show all," not "show one, and then make that person squeal like a pig."

Dealer should compel the shower to show all, not you to disclose what he showed.

Yes it's very common at low stakes, and maybe at higher stakes that I don't play.

I usually just smile and nod. I just take the free information and file it away. Show one show all is like the least enforced rule at every table ever. Occasionally there will be a player at the table who decides to make a big stink about it, and I don't mind. I'm not going to be that guy, because I do like to keep the games "friendly" but man it sometimes gets annoying when every time I'm in a hand against someone at the other end of the table and they're showing the guy next to them their cards.

The other one that sometimes annoys me is when folding or at showdown they show their hand at an angle so that only half the table or so can see it.

It did lead to a confusing spot the other day but the players in the hand rectified it. A guy bets the river and gets called by the guy in the seat next to him. Rather than flipping their hands up they just sort of showed them to each other where no one else could see them. You could tell from their comments who the winner was, but the winner released his cards first face down to the dealer, and he quickly scooped up the cards, and starts to push the pot the loser who still has cards in a hand. The guy was honest and redirected it to the winner, but it definitely seemed like a dumb situation to put themselves in. The showdown consisted of them showing each other and no one else their hands, confusing even the dealer and almost sent the pot to the wrong person.

I will show bluffs to whole table or flash cards if I had an interesting hand. But I always feel awkward when people show their cards and want you to sweat.

Agreed. "I don't remember." I don't condone lying and don't want to do it myself. But it's not my job to enforce show one show all either. Slippery slope, but in my mind they can direct that toward the dealer.

I also don't care if the player at the other end of the table shows his neighbor and not me. I consider that part of the "luck" off the game. (Luck in quotation marks because you can try to move seats if you want)

I think they generally do it to show how unfairly they're running. I try to nod wisely and then make appropriate commiseration noises if they lose the hand, and generally stay as expressionless as possible while the hand plays out.

LOL @ reciprocating. I didn't ask them to show me...thanks for the free info though I guess.

If it makes you feel awkward, wait until you're in between hands, then ask him to please not show you his cards.

Typically I view it three ways ...

1) They are advertising how they play to possibly mislead you when you are HU ... or get a 'courtesy' fold for 'a friend' later.

2) They want you to return the favor so they can get the scoop on you.

3) They really just do like you (or the looks of you) and are trying to drum up some table talk or 'support'. GL

If someone shows me a hand and then someone else asks what it was, I blab it immediately. I don't feel comfortable holding onto that information if someone asks.

I've found it to be #3 most of the time. It usually just seems to be someone who is there looking for a temporary friend.

In the rare cases when it’s not obvious what kind of hand they had AND I give a ****, I simply ask the player who flashed “hey, what did you show?” and they almost always say. If they don’t, someone who saw does.

This happens to me. All. The. Time.

I've concluded that it's because of how I look / how quiet I am.

It usually means your neighbors think you’re a nice guy.

I hate it. Hate it hate it hate it. I stupidly told a guy once to table his winner. I knew better, and still couldn't help myself -- it just came out.

After that ****-show, I specifically tell neighbors not to show me their hands if they start that stuff. "I don't want to know."

When will I finally learn to STFU?
