What happens to the BBJ when a room goes out of business? What happens to the BBJ when a room goes out of business?

Just curious if anyone has any experience with this.

I small (non-US) room I frequent is possibly ceasing operations soon and another player and I were just speculating what they will do with the bad beat jackpot.

Pocketing it would seem unethical since it's technically players money (unless there's something written into the fine print).

Any thoughts on what should happen to that money? any experience with what other rooms have done in a similar situation?

Gaming regulations address that.

I think standard procedure is to lower the requirements until it eventually hits?

regs vary by state.

Not sure it has to go back to poker players.

They could use it anywhere in the casino for any promotion they want.

In regulated areas they will usually just lower requirements every hour or whatever until it hits. Sometimes they will put it into HH jackpots instead, so that they can precisely regulate when it will run out (probably sometime right before the room closes).

I recall at least one recent thread where an indian casino put it into their pit game promotion bucket, iirc, and successfully argued that it met the spirit of the compact agreement about it.

In unregulated rooms, they will probably just pocket it.

Pretty much covered in just a few posts. There were stories of Players wearing diapers and barely being able to stay awake when a MS casino was closing/remodeling and they needed to purge the fund.

There was also a casino in 'The Dells' of WI that shut down just the poker room this past fall and purged with High Hands and Splash Pots.

The drops normally go into an escrow/separate account for promotions and when regulated it must be purged via promotions as intended. GL

Last summer when they closed the poker room at Snoqualmie, an Indian casino near Seattle, there were several thousand dollars left over in the bad beat jackpot. The casino gave it away through bonuses on the slots and table games. Poker players complained to the state gaming commission, but the commission supported the casino and the table game players got the money.

some of the horror stories in this thread are why these scumbag casinos shouldn't be able to start these things in first place. they get to use players money as a non interest loan, in order to intice the players back in...or worse, putting up billboards, feeding players, paying employees. such a freaking joke.

Don’t forget they often collect a percentage of the escrow to “manage” it. Thus they can decide how much money there will be and then mismanage it and get paid to do so.

Do they? I know some online poker sites used to do that but I've never heard of a regulated, B&M casino taking maintenance fees or whatever they want to call it.

There is (or was) at least one state that allows that (it is not allowed in Nevada).

This seems grossly abusable.

e.g., Hold a poorly advertised tournament on short notice with a 10k buyin at 2:30 am on a weeknight, and get a few of your friends to be the only registrants.

If I were a regulator/legislator, I would only allow it if there were enough conditions attached to convince me it wouldn't be exploited.
