I was looking at poker jobs and found this line under Essential Job Functions:

Quote:
Collects the poker revenue (“the rate”) from the pot in accordance with departmental raking procedures.
I bolded the relevant part. Is this a typo or have I been calling it wrong?

Agreed, likely a typo. It's the rake.

rake .. drop .. house cut ..

And if you aren't already aware, there could be two separate rakes at one time. One being for the house and the other being a 'Promo' Fund. GL

Definitely could simply be a typo. But they may be trying to distinguish between how much is taken, “the rate”, and the process/dealer actions to collect/pull the chips, “rake”.

They can use the words they choose, particularly if they define them. But generally, “rake” is used for both the $’s and actions.

If it wasn’t a typo, the second part of the sentence should be “ in accordance with departmental rating procedures”?

Not necessarily. The amount you take is the rate but how you do it is via rake.

I have heard places say “the rake rate is…”

A bit of a side question. Anyone know why it's called 'rake'? Something about 'raking in the chips', I suppose?

At the WSOP Seniors event this year, the first dealer at my table was a smallish Thai woman. She had a small plastic rake (a back-scratcher sorta thing) to help her collect the bets from the seats at the ends of the table. Worked great for her.

It could be that Players are 'raked over the coals' by the removal of chips from the pot?

I've seen a few Dealers use the actual rake on larger tables or 'as needed' with physical limitations. GL
