What exactly is checking (verb) and how would you translate it into Spanish?

Had a gentleman that only spoke Spanish at my table and I had to get his attention and I didn't know the word for check or even exactly what it meant: check as in looking, check as in cheque, etc?

I'm thinking something along the lines of:

"Señor, CHECK y apostar."

Just add an '0' when translating from English to Spanish. In this case it would be 'Check-0?'

Yep and if they don't understand, just repeat in a louder voice until they understand.

While I personally have no problem with what you're doing, you may be violating English-only rules. Players may be concerned that you're speaking ferrin' and complain. In particular, B&Mers have come down pretty solidly on that side every time I've had debates about how much non-English to allow.

Many of us understand a little Spanish.

Problem arises when any other language is the issue... what if what is said has nothing to do with the action of "checking" but instead is collusive in one way or another?

This is the underlying reason for "English only" IMO.

I believe it is "el cheque" so he should understand "check" anyway. Either way, it should be English only so he's going to need to learn at least the necessary words to play poker on his own. Not the other way around.

In Southern California most mexican players will say “checkiar”, which I think is just slang spanglish but fairly universal.

“Passar” also works and so does “ai le va” which loosely translates to “there it goes”.

Saying it in English and repeating in Spanish should quell the complaints, especially given the number of cognates and loanwords that I assume exist in poker jargon, unless you have the obstinate sort who wants people to speak "American".
